I would like to hear what the experience of EU2 PBEM MP games of you guys are!? ....both because I think its allways interesting to hear other peoples experiences with something weird/new/different....but also because I actually think this is such a cool fun way of playing that I would like to get other players a chance to "discover" PBEM and figured that perhaps if other players who have tried this would write a bit about their own experiences that it could inspire some new people to give it a try. ;)

First off...HOW DO U PLAY EU2 PBEM? (afterall this is a RT game isnt it?).

Well, basically u play PBEM by getting together a bunch of players (4-6 or something). Then the first player start up the appropriate scenario and play e.g. a 5 years period in SP then saving the game and emailing the savegamefile to the "next" player...who then play his turn in SP...then save and email it to the next player...etc. Now there are a bunch of more or less advanced houserules which u can use when playing pbem but I believe the common characteristics of pbem are:

- You play with/vs. human opponents like in normal MP.
- Much less timeconsuming than MP...& you dont need a fast connection!

Now,...when its not your turn and another player is having his turn with his country your country is obviously played by the ai...this can be very frustrating due to the obnoxiousness of the ai, but has been mostly solved by the ability of customizing the your countrys ai-file and thus influence the behavior and strategy of your ai.

Now this is the "normal" pbem EU2!

for some examples of pbem games notice the links in my signature or go see this one: Love's Labour's Lost: A PBEM Multiplayer AAR

The "normal" pbem fidling with the ai-files...inspired me to try something more something bigger...:D

Normal MP can maximum include 8 players and normal pbem can for practical reasons (how much play time u actually get with your country) also only contain a limited number of players...which in my experience is something like 4-6 players although u could probably include one or two more...

Now I have always thought it could be real cool to try a game with many human opponents so that the diplomatic situation would become somewhat more complex that what u see with only 8 players, this and the above ai fidling inspired me to create the NON-PLAYER format....

In a non-player game, you dont actually "play"...you give orders! - specifically the game is run as a handsoff game which is run for 10 years at a time (a turn length of 10yrs.) and each turn each player can then adjust the following:

- His AI-file (thus deciding upon colonization, who to consider an enemy and general battle tactics).
- His Event-file (thus making the ai take the event choises u want it to take!)
- Give OUT-OF-GAME & IN-GAME orders (according to an ActionPoint system) :

Out-Of-Game orders are edits which implemented by editing the savegamefile (done by the Game Master - me!). Examples of orders include:
- Implimenting a agreed upon peacedeal involving any of the below elements.
- adjusting the DP.
- hireing an Explorer or Conquistador.
- Break/Engage TA, MA, RM, Millitary Access, Millitary Alliance or Vassalization.
- Increase/Decrease relations, issue threats, warnings or guarantees.
- Boost research in certain tech fields.
- Transfer/cede ducats, provinces, map knowledge or ships to another nation.
- Giveup (e.g. as part of peacedeal!) or Reclaim CB-shields.
- Move Capital (under some rather strict and spc. cercumstances only!)

In-Game Orders are implemented by loading up the game as the approriate country (paused), carrying them out and then saving again. Examples of orders include:
- Take a loan
- Change state religion
- Release a Vassal
- Send Missionary
- Construct Shipyard/Manufactury or Conscription centre
- Hire mercenaries
- DoW a country!

Characteristics of Non-Player Pbem!
- You have absolute control of Grand Strategy and Diplomacy!
- Major Strategic control (who to war against and when!)
- Minor Tactical control (since u dont play...there is no "retreat" and stupid tactical ai...any ai country can be dangerous to war against...the human only have his strategic and diplomatic superiority to his advantage!)

If this sounds interesting see one of the below threads:
The Non-Player Rules - this is a very loong thread...which has evolved over time...the present rules at any time will be in the very first post of the thread!
See The Diplomacy Thread or go read The AAR!...

Now I hope that some of you guys who have read this far have in interested in trying one of the pbem type of games....I think they are great fun after all thats why Im spending time writing this post advertising the whole format a bit.....

If you have any quistions or might be interested in joining the ongoing Non-Player Pbem Game...then please drop me a PM and Im sure we can fit u in with a nice country! (for list of current players and countries taken go to the top of the Diplomacy Thread!)

Definatly PBEM is fantastic,

When it comes down to it only a human can give you a challange (unless it's hopelessly one sided, and even then......)

While i've played a couple of PBEM's now, there's always the urge to do more, because everyone's always coming up with new ideas
(ie. teamgames, playing multiple nations, etc)

One idea that I've been kicking around recently is banning new world conquests, or even using colonists - that way only the ai can colonise for you, and there won't be the unfortunate player dominance of the new world which always happens.

This actually brings me to the One bad point of PBEM, that is, during the player's turn, the country shines - conqoring pagans, invading nations twice it's size etc etc, - then it slowly decays during other players turns until it's next turn.

(Good points about PBEM include, Dangerous, thinking opponents, convenient time wise since it's almost SP, etc)

Fortunatly, that one fault seems like it could be fixed in the Non-Player PBEM! Rather than a series of 5-7 year golden ages for each country, every single player is on nearly equal tacticle footing - and it all starts coming down to diplomacy, picking your battles, long term plans, and yes - a bit of luck in wars!

I'm confident Non-Player pbem has the potential to build a more realistic europe over time, basically it's like the ultimate ai - ai that can plan for the future!

Come join, there's no player limit, and we still need Bohemia, the Papacy, and *gasp* now England filled!

I have to say that it is a completely different game, but it is much more like a 'real' PBM since you give orders instead of playing for a few hours.

Diplomacy becomes a bigger issue, while player skill and amount of time to spend becomes less important.

I think it is nice, and just wanted to point that out :)

Non-Player PBEM discovered by Boehm

It's only few months I'm playing EU2. The game captured me totaly and I couldn't resist it. I've played few single-player games and no classical PBEM game yet. I can imagine it and maybe in the future, when I'll have more time to spend on playing.

When I came to this forum first, one thing interested me the most. Yes, it was boehm's Non-Player PBEM game, just starting at that time. New idea, I think we can say VERY good idea, making this fantastic game once more "closer to people". No one directly manage the country in the classical point of view, but players have many opportunities to do so.

One biggest benefit of this game is that many human players govern their countries that gives very different atmosphere to this game. Diplomacy and AAR related with it can give you a point.

At the end I must say, that boehm has done good work and all players hungry for entertainment and some kind of RPG should try this game. Farewell

PBEM is especially nice if you want to experience that "multiplayer feeling", and your internet connections is just too d*** slow... or you need to dial-up first and have to pay per minute you're online (which, sadly, applies to me...)

and ummm.... *bumping* this thread to the top again, hehe ;)

The per minute (or second :) ) payment applies to me too. :(
So PBEM and Non-Player PBEM is good choice, despite I spend lot of time online browsing this forum :D .

I definatly find myself on the net more thanks to PBEM - where else can you be wondering

"Hmmm, has Burgundy recieved backlash about the peidemont situation yet? I'll just jump online for a tic to check....."

6 Hours later:

"Hmmm, has Burgundy responded to the backlash the French gave regarding the peidemont situation yet? I'll just jump online for a tic to check......"

And now with a few more players we'll be treating to seeing their take on the game - Imagin a game where every nation was played! :D You couldn't invade a single nation without at least three people complaining!

(Come to think of it, let's NOT have every nation played!)

Turn 5 has now been resolved....and yes we are still looking for new players ;)

although all the major nations are taken it could still be a challenge to take one of the minors through guts and glory!

This is the current list of players:
Burgundy - Gorlin (option on the Netherlands)
Moscowy - Ondoval (previously known as orion)
Portugal - Barnius
Sweden - Ironfoundersson
The Ottomans - Gezeder
France - Petrarca
Castille - Lord Ederon
Poland - Sabaron
Austria - Asaris
Saxony - Owen
Denmark - Nikolai II
Venice - Ludovico
Scotland - Caesar Augustus
Papal States - Shantra
England? - Rafael Tomas
Marocco - Snorri
Bohemia - Abyssus_j

Aragon, Lithuania, Hungary and the Mamelukes are NOT selectable until after it has been shown whether their inheiritance events kick in (naturally if they are inherited they ceace to exist is not selectable either *lol*) - the mamelukes can be selected after 1550.

Any other European or North African nation is selectable....interesting options would probably include:
Brandenburg, Prussia, Genoa, Helvetia, Bavaria, Georgia, Algeria, Tunisia, Brittany, Ireland or Navarre.....

After 1550 I will probably allow Persia and some nations in India if enough players are interested to make it "interesting" (I will not allow a player to have India to him self)
