Re: Super-fanatastic PBEM rules

The pbem would consist of 6 players (I assume we could get another to join - Gezeder?). 3 players in each "alliance", with the turns rotating back and forth between the two alliances. Each player in the alliance chooses the country he will play when his turn comes up, but he is not restricted to a set country throughout the game, only to the countries available in the alliance (thus getting to continually switch between the different countries in the alliance to give help where it is needed, etc) Each country can only be chosen once per Round.
Points will be calculated at the end of the game, based on the following scheme.

I'll start with this part. I like the idea of some type of team competition. It should be even teams so that would mean six players. However I think we would have to go to 5 year turns, which is the least amount of years per turn that is doable. If we go this route then Gezeder should be invited to play. I think we should each pick one country and stay with that country and not switch to different countries but we can talk about it and maybe someone can change my mind. I think we need to agree about this part before we decide what countries to play.

I like the idea of holding certain provinces/cities to get points. The point total would have to be an ongoing thing but shouldn't be hard to calculate. It could be something as simple as whoever holds Rome (and other cities to be named) gets x amount of points per turn. These point-generating cities can be scattered around the world. Do we have to actually own the province or just capture it. Obviouly one requires you to conquer the enitre country whlie the other just lets to capture it. It might be difficult for the others if one of us has annexed it.

Edit: I suppose a way around this is whoever conquers the province can just make it a vassal. That way anyone can still conquer it and get points.

However if we're not careful with picking the cities we will end up in another colonization type of game. Maybe the point generating cities should mainly be in Europe and the Middle East? Ludovico has done a good job of starting to put together this idea.

On an unreatled note I will be gone the week of September 9-15th. We can still start before then but I wanted to let you know that I'll have to skip my turn if it comes up then.

I've been thinking about it, and I think a team game would be great,

It occured to me, this game would have a different tempo to usual, since in most games attacking another player is quite risky, as it weakens the two fighting - indirectly adding streangth to the other players. Also, it starts a war with a nation you otherwise might have been able to aviod,

Now, however, if one player is doing well, it might make sense to lock your nation into a death grip struggle with it, in an attempt to see that the TEAM wins, even if your nation crumbles!

Hmmmmm, sounds good!

sweden-france-ottomans
vs.
spain-austria-russia
(maybe start in 1700 or 1617?)

russia-denmark-poland
vs
sweden-netherlands-england

france-poland-denmark
vs
russia-austria-england

sweden-denmark-france
vs
england-russia-austria

or maybe a balkans one
where hungary and the ottomans are dangerous

serbia, moldavia, wallachia, croatia, bosnia, or is that to dangerous (you being annexed while not your turn)

or maybe a moslem one
ottomans-algiers-?
vs
mamelukes-ak-koyunlu-?

I don't mind waiting until you come back. Would prefer it really as I have a lot ongoing just at the moment.

I think it depends on what type of game we are playing to decide on what year we should start.

I personally really like the idea of a

Spain/Austria/Russia
vs
France/Sweden/Ottomans game

as natt och dag suggested. I give it my 100% support, and suggest we start trying to get this game going :)
It has some historical justification, would let us play Hapsburgs vs. French coalition, and would give a fairly nice scope of Europe.

We could play this in 1492, 1617, 0r 1700, and all would have a fair balance. In the later scenarios, Spain/Austria would dwindle, but Russia would pick up some slack, and France would pick up the Ottoman slack. But overall, 1492 is probably most fair for all countries involved, so it gives both a golden era, and an era of decline.

Also, how to pick countries would have to be determined (lottery?). I assume turn length would be 5 years, since 6 players would be playing.

Whatever countries we play I would suggest that we alternate turns by alliance. This way you never have two countries in the same alliance in consecutive turns. If you allow allies to follow one another it will be too easy to destroy an enemy country before his allies can come to his rescue. A 5-year turn sounds right. 1492 sounds like the best scenario. What is the goal to be? Victory points alone?

As to the countries to play that can be tricky. I’m still thinking about it.

Ok peeps, I propose the game as follows. I'd prefer that we start soon, so the less discussion, and the more tyrannical impulses of Ludovico, the better:

Scenario - Age of Exploration (1492)
V. 1.05
Turn Length - 5 years
Difficulty - Hard
Agression - Normal

Alliance #1

A - Spain
B - Austria
C - Russia

Alliance #2

a - France
b - Sweden
c - Ottoman Empire

Turn Order

AaBbCc
BaAbCc
AcCaBb
CbBcAa
BaCbAc

Repeat

How should we decide who gets what country? And what alliance each team gets?

I suggest arbitrarily -

Europeans - Boehm, Natt och dag, Wyvern
vs
The Remnants of the British Empire (excluding UK herself) - Ludovico, Storey, Gezeder

Each alliance can divy up the countries, based on whatever.

Victory conditions/Goals

We can work out something like I did before with points being alloted for certain provinces, religions, etc - if so, please give me the go ahead, and I'll work out some rules. Or make some rules and propose them. :)

Otherwise (and I'd prefer this less formal way of doing things):

France and allies must break Hapsburg hegemony. Ottoman Empire should threaten Vienna and Russia and significantly unite the Moslem lands. Sweden should dominate the Baltic.

Spain should posses South and Central America and hold the Iberian peninsula, Austria should be a continental force, and Russia should conquer Poland and colonize Siberia.

A draw assumes these conditions are met on both sides. If an alliance succeeds in overfulfilling its countries expectations (or conversely, succeeds in not allowing the other alliance to fulfill its expectations), this alliance is victorious.

If it is hard to tell, call it a draw :) But we should reasonably know which alliance is doing better (I think we all knew Boehm won the last game without checking the VP points).

Similarly, each country should be able to prove itself against the yardsticks I provided. I think they are generally what "should" happen, all things being equal.

So!

How should we choose countries? ;)

If anyone wants to veto this, speak now please.

Well, that sounds good to me,

Not sure about selecting countries, I guess this is two questions:

Within teams, how to select countries.
(I think this could be sorted easily by each team, by email etc.)

Which team gets which selection? (oops, just noticed ludovico already suggested the teams too....)

So, if everyone's okay with ludovico's suggestion, I think we should just organise with each team mate regarding teams, via say Private messages?

Excellent :)

One more thing regarding knocked out countries:

Should they be able to choose a new country?

I suggest that they either have to have their country "freed" by an ally, or they have to play another vassal freed by an ally. Simply for game play reasons - it makes "suicide" missions less likely, and it makes us work as a team more.

Boehm, as winner of the last game, I suggest you win the privelege to pick what set of 3 countries you want for your alliance (French or Hapsburg). Just so we have them picked and all :) I think they are fairly even...

I like the idea of having to either recapture and free your allie, or, barring that, releasing a vassel of your own for them to play. It suits the way majors used to prop up small nations to fill power vacuums :)

Hell I always wanted to try to beat France with Spain ;) (afterall I already tried the opposite in our juxtaposition game)

anyway I guess that means that us Europeans will be playing

Spain, Austria and the Russia...unless someone strongly objects??

Hmmmm, so you have a grudge against France, and are probably going Spain...... Wonder which one of us gets the hotseat!

Scary stuff! :)
