Rome, 1st January 1936.

VT-IT-ART-39710-Pio_xi.jpg

Achille Ambrogio Damiano Ratti, came on the throne of St. Peter, archbishop of Rome, second of Christ on the Earth and supreme head of the Roman Catholic Church as His Holyness Pius XI.

It was a year that, under the blessing of Austria, the numerous Italian duches were united in the so called "Italian Federation".
In Vienna it was believed that a union of the moltitude Italian states born from the dissolution of the Kingdom of Italy was necessary to face in a more calm atmosphere the numerous internal concerns.
The status quo was lasting from more than 15 years, but then things changed, and His Holyness was having a mandate over Italy, or at least a part of it.
It was the proof that "the ways used by our Lord are infinite", thought Pius XI, while sitting in his office. He was thinking about what happened. In 1860 the Papacy was stripped of Umbria and Marche (zones of Perugia and Ancona, ndr) for the proclamation of the kingdom of Italy, with the ruthless and unfaithful atheist of Camillo Benso Cavour. Then, in 1870 even Rome was lost to this state that was against the Christianity. Then the "cold war", with episodes like the "non expedit".
It was a difficult time for the Church: stripped of their rightfully owned territories from millenniums, forced to face the expansion of this new atheist vision of the world that is socialism.
"Even Jesus himself was tempted, by the devil, in the desert. We can't think that we are safe from difficult trials, or we would commit blasphemy by considering us superior than Jesus". This made him feeling immediately more confortable.
Then the first Weltkrieg... how was defined by his predecessor (Benedictus XV, ndr)? Oh, the "suicide of civil Europe" and the "useless bloodbath".
But it would be a lie not thinking that, in the end, this was helping... The last great Catholic power, Austria-Hungary, showed its force against the invaders sent by Turin decades ago, and despite the division of Italy was seen as a humiliation, it was a necessary step for reviving the great scheme of God, designed by Vincenzo Gioberti in 1848.
In a time of tribolation and darkness, the Italians discovered again to be Catholic, and decided to rely on the love of our almighty Father. This led the governants to swear fidelty on us, and to rely more and more on us.
Even the birth of a new Satanist state, the Commune of France, helped us in this way: for the need of security, they asked us for union.
Davide fought Golia, but the Jews could never get their land without fighting toghether instead of fighting each other, and we must follow the examples provided in the Bible.
And so, the scheme of His Holyness as the head of Italy is half complete. And this gives us new challenges.

"His Holyness, how can this conciliate with the message of love and peace that Christ taught us multiple times?", asked Cardinal Dalla Costa, who was coming and heard.
Pius XI had the habit of thinking too loud. He answered "My dear son, the ancient Romans would answer you 'Pax Christi in regno Christi consequenda est; sed, si vis pacem, para bellum'. Pax Christi in regno Christi..."

Cardinal Elia Dalla Costa

So guys, this was merely the interlude.
Welcome to my new project of an AAR. As you will have seen by the title, I will pick the Italian Federation, as I saw that there was only an AAR of a lot of time ago about this nation.
In this AAR, I will adopt a different style from the old one. I will no more use a book style, but I will use a style typical of the ancient Rome: the history of the nation, year per year. An example is the "Annales Maximi".
I want to recreate a sense of nostalgy for a great past, opposed to a dark present and a refuge from it.
As usual, I will try to update week per week, or when I end a month/three months/six months/year (I will decide).

In the next update I will discuss what is the situation by 1936: army, air force, navy. And I will expecially define my objectives.
Well, one is obvious, but I do not want to stick only on it. But I will not start the actual game without clarifying and defining them: it maybe was a mistake in the last game.

So, rendez - vous for tomorrow

Huh, an Italian Federation AAR for KR?
Now there's a rare bird.

Veeeeery interesting. I had to read Tacitus for a historiography class, but judging by your past AARs, this will be way more interesting than his writings.

Remember, Kingdom of Italy is best Italy!

My dear brother, only time can tell us what is the project of our Lord for us. We can only wait for the events, being prepared and relying on Him

In the ancient Rome, the first centuries, it was used to put at the first day of the year white tables, the most important events were written by the Pontifex Maximus on them and were eventually exposed in the end of the year, marked by the name of the two "consules"

To everyone: thanks for being interested. I will do my best not to disappoint you :D

1936

1st January: the reformation of the cabinet. For the new year, the transition was considered over by Pius XI and a lot of ministers were removed from their task and others were chosen in order to improve the usage of the not so abundant Italian resources.

2ztk36q.jpg

The cabinet before the reformation

k50ocg.jpg

The new cabinet, after the reformation. There were new leaders, which believed or in a more comprehensive conscription, or in a more offensive approach during the battles or masters of diplomacy. There was also an impulse for an economy of war

Due to the change to a more offensive approach, it was decided to change also the doctrines. The defensive approach was discarded, and instead it was chose to make the infantry the bulk of the army (as Italy, I do not have for now the necessary IC to develop tanks, while instead the territory can make me benefit a lot of specialized infantry, ndr).

wt7y2o.jpg

With this revolution, it was decided that there should have been great improvements for the infantry. It was unacceptable to be back the major powers in what would have been the specialization.

You can also see the global state of the Federal Armed Forces

Then there was to deploy more efficientely the army, formed at the time by 17 divisions

2zoxmo3.jpg

It was decided to leave a small garrison against the Syndies, as the intelligence clearly told that the Republican Army (south italy) was skeleptical and the French were far more interested in Germany. The rest of the army was instead sent at the Austrian border.

358ard0.jpg

The air force was instead skeleptical. It was ordered to reunite in Rome for a reorganization.

2mrvevp.jpg

It was then the moment of the Navy. There was a decent combat group suited for home defence and a potential tranport flotilla.

2n9yhl2.jpg

Seen the status of the army, a production of Infantry and airplanes was ordered: Italy had to be ready to immediately face a conflict, expecially due to the instability of Austria.

30i7wd1.jpg

So, what are my objectives? I will define them now.
I will consider me victorious if:

5dqsft.jpg

I will do again the Risorgimento and the unification of Italy. I will also take south Austria: Trento, Venice, Bolzano, Belluno, Udine, Trieste, Capodistria and Pola will be under my control.

16acf39.jpg

Karlovac (as there is Fiume), Split, Knin and Dubrovnik were possession of the Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia. They will be mine.

2qk7b6h.jpg

For the same reasons I claim Corfu and Crete. The latter is also a strategic base in the Mediterranean. I also want back the "Dodecaneso", which now is owned by the Ottomans. I have also a wish on Istanbul.

2rogqvs.jpg

I actually want the supremacy on the Mediterranean: so I will in the end get Suez and in a way or in the other Alexandria will be mine.

33l1hlg.jpg

I want back Libya, and also Tunisia belongs to Italy (it was claimed soon before Italy joined the Triple Alliance. Of course, Malta is a target of primary importance.

25hit8j.jpg

Gibraltar will be under my control.

I can leave Gibraltar and Alexandria, actually, also in the hands of Spain or Egypt, at condition that they will be my allies. The other islands will be under my direct control and if necessary I will have a lot of puppets... dommage! :D

If Tripolitania/Libya will remain Ottoman, dow them should trigger the second Italian-Ottoman war chain event with the possibility to reclaim the Dodecanese as well.

Thing is that they most likely won't,they will join the Middle Eastern Axis or be solo, which would make it easier. The real challange is that WK II needs to be won by Germany,or he's gonna be F*cked by the Syndies

Actually I remember a game where I held the Alps thanks to garrisons and 10 level forts :D
In the end we were all in a stalemate and it was just a countdown for nukes.

So yes, basically he has to hope that Germany wins.

1936

15th January: the new encyclical of Pius XI is published. Quadrigesimo quinto anno

2u8w2m1.jpg

19th January: breakthrough about bellic technologies, as there are new discovers about rocketry. It is now argued whether it will be possible to use them in a war, in the future.

xaw6tk.jpg

23rd January: the clearance of the Pontine Marshes starts. It is expected to use the recovered lands to create new jobs and to house a lot of farmers.

2u4po9k.jpg

21st February: the crisis of 1936, better known as "Black Monday" as it exploded on Monday, 3rd February, hits also the economy of the Federation.

5ag9ad.jpg

17th March: The Holy See is involved in the social crisis of the USA, as Father Charles Coughlin, a Catholic priest, started to do anti-semithic propaganda and is now followed by millions of people. The americans asked us to take a postion, but in this difficult time the Papacy just can't take a position, as the people needs a united Church against the crisis. If they want to shut him down, they will do this by their own

2w58uuh.jpg

26th May: the industrial production goes on. Knowing that the Ausgleich is approaching, the Pope wants to be ready to take advantage of an Austrian crisis, and orders the production of more divisions to be ready for a minor/regional war.

jhro8l.jpg

2nd June: Panem et circenses. The Olympic games begin

dtn4w.jpg

In the meantime, the Federation is contacted by Xavier Borbone - Parma, the main exponent of the Carlist branch of Spain. He asks for a creation of an "economic block" of Mediterranean. The Pope gives his consense, as they have been extremely devoted Catholics.

210hqqa.jpg

16th June: the Olympics ended, but the people are satisfied of the Italian athlets.

2dt3itd.jpg

7th November 1936: the 2nd American Civil War is raging, and a lot of volounteers decide to leave the Italy devastated by the economical crisis to fight for Huey Long, seen as the only good defense against Syndicalism

Why not a "Papa Re d'Italia" ? I could never forget that old, awesome Vic 1 AAR where Pious IX was the unifier of Italy hence crowned as King of Italy...Only to see the collapse of Papal Italy in various republics short after.
