I propose that some effort to made in creating wildcard contracts where you take a patrol mission to operate on a planet for a certain amount of days and get paid the rates per day per merc reputation plus salary/salvage per flashpoint. The wildcard part is where you don't know the mission until the call comes up to hustle to do the following request;

Search and destroy a suspected opfor at a location
Defend a base while also helping some refugees from a failed op
Defend a sabotaged base/mech from capture while the opfor tried to defer you
Reach a crash site to safeguard a VIP/Cargo before the opfor arrives and defend until rescue
Gather intel on suspected location where the enemy travelled and gather info
Rescue one of your mercs as s/he has the recon data and a PO Atlas on their tail
Capture a target by defeating the escort or hitting the target enough to force a surrender
etc.

Also some pre-existing situations might help spice it up where the orders came late, wrong area, faulty intel, smoke from a bomb blast making visuals difficult, etc

Of course, you could go through the whole contract which nothing happens and get paid your rate for a milk run.

This is essentially what the Flashpoint content does. You would be making a series of consecutive drops (to ensure the player doesn't leave the system or take additional contracts), in which 'something' happens. The difference between what you're proposing and what the current Flashpoint does is that you're basically talking about putting procgen missions into a consecutive drop Flashpoint. And hopefully HBS is already working on that.

"Welcome, Commander. Your area of operations is Sector Charlie Romeo Tango. We suspect [mission] is already in the area. Please start your patrol there and we will give you updates as things progress."

<insert procgen mission>

"Commander, we have updated information now. You need to progress to Lima Charlie Delta and [mission]."

<insert procgen mission>

"Great work commander. These buggers are persistent. Proceed to coordinates 10,80 Papa and engage in [mission]"

<insert procgen mission>

"We have a bead on them now. Head to Uniform Hotel Delta and engage. After [mission] there's probably on one group left."

<insert procgen mission>

"Yep. 4 Kilo is the last area of engagement."

<insert procgen mission>

"Thank you for your work in this, Commander. Here's a bonus."

Sounds good, but there's no real point to the patrolling part, is there?

I mean the fun is the random stuff that happens while you're in the area, right?

Basically what Mech 1 and Mech 2: Mercs did with the random missions generator, you did patrols off-screen and only play when there's something to blow up.

It would for sure be a seriously missed opportunity if they dont ...
