It's pretty much just random events, yeah. In my most recent Byzantium game I got 100% Patriarch Authority (for the achievement) by about 1590, IIRC.

There are also a few missions, like retake alexandria and restoring pentarchy. Actually it may just be restoring pentarchy, I can't remember now :(

As for how it works, higher authority = more stability, missionary strength, and manpower but less tax income. Great to combo it with production and trade.

You get a hefty amount by the mission: "Convert Anatolia" too, around 10-15% I think.

But thats an ERE thing, I dont know for the rest.

I also noticed that the frequency were events fire might have something to do with weather you have religious or not. But dont make why word on it.

It's pretty much just random events, yeah. In my most recent Byzantium game I got 100% Patriarch Authority (for the achievement) by about 1590, IIRC.

I am 30 years short and I have less than 50% and I increased it on all events.

Playing as Muscovy I have 25 in 1520, in my last game I had about 70 in the 1700s I believe, seems kinda crappy compared to reformed but I guess everything does. Just kinda annoyed I cannot convert :p No missions for Muscovy.
