Anyway to go back to 1.4 I wanted to finish my game before I went to 1.5.

You are too late, you would have had to backup the game before you updated.
You can run the game without starting Steam, and only start Steam if you want a patch.

Don't open Steam, you can still play the game by going to the steam folder and opening the launcher from there.
Or you can copy/paste your game folder somewhere else before updating so you have both versions.
