If I downloaded and installed CK and DV from Gamer's Gate a couple of weeks ago, do I need to install any additional patches, or would those files have been completely up to date?

I have no idea about Gamersgate. However the Crusader Kings: Complete game that I bought included an older version and I still had to use the beta patch from 15. Octobre.

Just rightclick on your crusaders.exe file and look what date is displayed.

I believe the only patch you need for CK+DV is the Beta DV patch
