There should be an 'adopt son' option. For couples that haven't had a male son you should be able to adopt a son for them as long as they have fortune to spend on it. This should create a random male between 1-10 years for them.

Adoption of male children was common in that time for families that wanted to continue their legacy but haven't had any male natural son. They paid a lot of money for good and healthy sons of other families.

This should help to solve the problem of lack of characters and end of family lines.

Consolidate?

My game is broken :( :(

I am playing with Carthage after expanding the country from South France to Alexandria I have finished with the pool of characters. Yes I get "free" chars every now and then but the death rate due to age and illness is equal to the rate at which i get new character so I am almost constantly with 0 characters in the character pool. I can't even make diplomacy becuase of it most of the time  . Now this is something game breaking and we need a patch for this, not an expansion.
Would it be possible to consolidate armies or fleets? This would free characters. Alternatively, I've used an appropriate governor for an important diplomatic mission. It will leave a province without a governor, but only for a month.

Yes I can do all what you suggest, the thing is it is not a sensible thing to do from a Carthaginian point of view, it is just a forced decission by an unfounded lack of leadership. With 167K men and 118 ships I have 12 armies and 10 fleets, the empire I described is long I need to have my army and fleet spread out to cope with rebellion due to nationalism and barbarian settlers in some provinces and of course the posibility of war on any border at the most unconvenient time. I do enjoy some micromanagement but now it is hell, when someone important dies (tech officer, commander, admiral or key province governor) I need to shuffle governors and tech officers and that happens monthly so all the fun becomes tedious. The empire isn't crumbling but I am boring.

Pond Scum for Leaders

Playing as Rome, I too, suffer from a limited pool of candidate officials. And when I say "pool", think in terms of a baby's wadding pool. Sometimes, my only candidates are 0-0-1 fools with 25% corruption -- great assassins when I need a CB, but not much good for anything else.
With a personal Roman Republic that spans 88 provinces, I understand about doing the "Office Shuffle". I find it frustrating and have screamed "NOoooo!" at the screen, but I accept it as part of not only the game but maybe history as well. Having 88 governors, 20 generals, 6 admirals and 6 tech leaders that are all totally competent in their jobs is an awful lot to ask of any nation and still have capable diplomats and bumbling assassins available. We have an equally hard time now a days finding capable office holders! :D
The term of office for some Roman governors was only a year or two. I'm glad that Paradox did not go that "historical" with the game.

I suggest you use the '20 Roman Women And Girls' mod by TheLand and edit your defines.txt to cut down the number of assassinations. I'm using 10% chance with 60 months between attempts and my character pool is looking good so far. This only works for Rome though. If you want to play another country, you'll have to make your own women and girls first.

I have installed the Roman Women mod. I haven't used it yet. With the 1.3 patch, I wanted to see if I could survive without it. So far, I've been able to get by.
As for the number of assassinations, I haven't found it a problem. What I have done is try to keep my BB well below my limit. I.E. if the limit is 37 with a good consul, I try to keep my BB definitely below 20 and nearer to 15 max. I see multiple assassinations as a warning that my BB level is making other nations uncomfortable. Then it's time to become "domestic" -- colonization, province improvement or maybe a new NI if I can spare the gold.

Good idea, but probably instead of creating a random character it should be the players choice amongst eligible boys from the families already in existence. Admittedly this would not exactly help on the problem of too few characters, but it would be more realistic as adopted boys did come from other aristocratic families and it would add another element in the internal politics between the various families (adopting a son from another family would of course strengthen the bond between that familiy and the ruler while it would probably lessen it between other families whose eligible son was not chosen).

Hi, it's my first post on this forum so as a Norwegian (northern) I find it fitting that it's a sort of complain/wish list. Want, complain and vulgar are the three pillars up north. ;)

1) Provincial governors should in defence of their province be considered a general when there are armies there and not only defend the provincial city.

I really don't know how the defending general is chosen when there are more than one but I guess it's some kind of popularity contest, so I'll suggest that the governor is part of that contest.

The advantage of this is that you don’t have to appoint a lot of character to islands and other problem provinces where you only want small garrison armies. If the Consul can rule Rome and go on a fleet cruise, then the governor should be fully capable of taking command of an army in his province.

2) By the way is there an updated appendix from the strategy guide and a complete summary of character traits anywhere.

Feel free to insert "please", "sincere" and other polite word in my text. As a north-Norwegian I really don't know how to use those correctly. :p

Great game.

More wishes for patch/addon:

-Historical Characters Spawn

Each month, the game checks if there's enough characters in each country and if there are not, it creates some few random characters. The history folder is full of historical characters that are not used. The game just draws the historicals chars active in the year that you start the campaign, and forget about the whole rest of the valious file. Since almost everytime you start the game in 474, there are almost 300 years of valious character documentation there that are completely ignored and useless (heck, they are even saved into the savegame file marked as 'country = ---' so you can see all these historical guys that you are missing :eek:o ). Why not use them and give the devs documentation effort a good use?. I say that with every monthly check, if new chars need to be spawned, the game should check if there's any historical char available for that timeframe and use it. Chars whose documented parents have already spawned should be blocked from spawning. It would be a bit weird to see a 20-30 years old historical appear when their supposed fathers have had only female childs in the curse of the game, or were captured / assasinated, etc, etc

Ideally, in the case of those characters whose parents are documented, the game should check in his birth date if his parents are active, married and alive and create them as a child with the correspondent traits and atributes.

Btw, all historical chars should have some icon or mark in the interface so you could tell them from the randomly spawned ones while you play.
