Patch installation

Sorry to ask such simple questions but I need to.

1) How do you download Patch 1 and make sure it works?

2) How do you download Patch 2 and make sure it works?

Last night I went to updates in the Game menu and tried to download the patches, but I ended up having to uninstall the entire game because after I extracted the files, windows Vista would tell me the game had to shut down.
To me that means I probably did not send the Patch to where it was supposed to go. Please help, thank you in advance and sorry about my lack of software application knowledge.

I try to give you simple instructions. This is how to manually update the game. You don't need the patch1, patch2 includes patch1.
IMPORTANT: make sure the game is NOT running and have your CD-key ready.
1. Type this in your web browser: http://patches.gamersgate.com/EIC_patch2_EN.zip
2. If your browsers asks what to do with the file, select "open"
3. Once the file has downloaded and opened drag the two files to your desktop (eic_patch2.exe & eic_patch2-1a.bin)
4. Double click the "eic_patch2.exe" on your desktop
5. Follow the instructions (basically just click "ok" or "next" everywhere and give your cd-key & email when asked to do so).
6. After the installer has finished, launch the game.
7. You should see version number (1.0.0.5 or something similar) in top-right corner of main menu - this means the patch installed ok.

I really think there was huge improvement with the new patch, the battle speed control and the additional info in commander info really make the game more enjoyable.
