Once we got patch 5.1 with a new checksum and everything, will this invalidate current save games and prevent achievements from completing if you load a saved game started with 5.0?

That's a very good question. Certain achievements require a large anount of time to get; I hope that the achievements won't get disabled for 5.0, as my AAR still needs to be completed :(

Most likely, but you still have plenty if time to finish your ongoing achievements and you dont have to download the new patch immediatly when it comes.

I know that unless you disable automatic patching with Steam it'll install as soon as the patch is available. I'm quite sure some will complain to Paradox because of this.

Exactly my point. So I'm just asking the question in advance so it doesn't bite people in the butt when the new patch comes.

I dind't expect there to be people who have chosen achievements over betapatches.

Paradox need to implement a better achievment system for Sengoku/CKII if they want to keep them. All this checksum malarky is just too restrictive...

Checksum malarky? All games with achievements must do it, whether hidden or in sight, to ensure that the games are the same version as each other. I like it so I have some more things to go on when I get a version mismatch other than simply reinstalling and praying.

Problem is, the checksum thing is how they verify that you haven't edited your files. EU3 is very mod-friendly, but the price to pay for that is that they need some way to make sure you didn't mod your game just to make the achievement super-easy to get.

Perhaps a slightly better approach would be to allow everyone access to the achievements but you can only get the 'Paradox approved' versions with the right checksum.

Why would you want non-paradox aproved ones then that everybody obviously has because they cheated for them?

They wouldn't necessarily have cheated for them, they might have actually managed them under harder circumstances - e.g. a world conquest with a mod that makes it harder to blob.

However, I reckon that they are best only having the "vanilla" achievements, or allowing the mod-makers to create their own achievements that are clearly labelled as associated with the mods rather than the base game - Possibly in the format "Mod-name - Insert-achievement-here"

Did Paradox release any other games or addons with achievement support btw? They had several releases this year and AFAIK only Dreamlords supports this feature.

Considering that, the DW beta marathon and that they forgot to register the new 5.1, it seems that achievements aren't really on their priority list.
I mean, those are the pure basics and they are barely covered. Thus I surely wouldn't expect them to find solutions for extras, as achievements support for mods.

Achievments aren't serious business it doesn't really matter one fig if someone cheats to get them. However I would like to play a game with the inevitable Paradox release bugs fixed, ie the beta patches or simple mods like correcting the fact that it was imposible to westernise as a muslim tech nation in DW 5.0, and still get achivements. Having one very strict checksum just seems overkill as it means that people go with the beta and just ignore the achievments totally. That is a shame, achievements can be a fun addition to the game...

So they are not worth a fig, yet they are a fun addition? See, the reason they are fun is because they give a feeling of completion and reward through point amounts. If people are able to cheat for this amount scathe free, all of a sudden you have no credibility for them and they are not rewarding.

So has the can people connect to paradox now? since I cant -.-

No, still no.

Well, regardless of if other people are cheating to get them, I still feel the reward of getting them come up. I'd be in favour of more achievements - possibly for the other unifications, defeating traditional enemies and that sort of thing.

I find them a fun addition in that I like achieving them myself. I see no need to compare my self, or a gamer score to others. Thus I do not care if others cheat to get them, this is because they are not worth a fig. I would rather be able to get them myself while playing a beta patched or personally modded game, and don't mind if this allows others to cheat to get them.

Achievements are to me about the fun challenge of getting them, not about the 'crediblity' that getting them gets me.

WHAT! Are you sure? Is THAT why I did not get the Jihad-achievement after completing it? But I did get the World Conquest achievement in the same game, which would not have been possible if you were not able to get them at all, after westernizing as a Muslim nation.

I really don´t like achievements in Paradox games. Paradox make great games, but they are bug infested on release. Spending hundreds of hours on an achievement that does not fire on completion is no fun. Ordinary bugs can be solved by patching the game and will therefore eventually be fixed. But that is not the case for achievements since they demand the same checksum. That said, achievements are not for game developers who like their paying customers to be beta-testers. But I don´t know, maybe it´s the same for all games no matter who made them. DW is the first time that I ever cared about getting achievements. Maybe games like Dragon Age II and Civ V are no better, only that I did not notice bugs related to broken achievements since I did not care about them when I played the games.
