One other thing I noticed: It looks like HA are going to be relatively useless without Altaic generals, since they're now worthless in melee (down to a 1 attack, and reduced defense as well). I guess Catahpracts went from the strongest retinue to now the weakest?

This weakens the intrigue focus considerably. Hope the opinion malus for banishment gets reduced or removed entirely if there is a just cause.
I keep seeing people say this, but hasn't the opinion malus always just been "10 + the hit for revoking all of their titles"? So.. now it'd just always be 10. And if you still want their titles you can just revoke them individually and get the same result you would have from old banishment

But then there's no reason to banish, since executing them will still only get you the 10 opinion malus... AND you don't have to worry about people with claims outside your realm, AND kids don't care when you execute their parents.

Hmm they are not, maybe forgot to add that in the changelog, they get the bonuses from your capital now.
But do the various retinues (especially Heavy Infantry) still have completely random amounts of bonuses? Most of the other retinue types have fairly consistent bonuses (at least by amount of bonus received), at least for the target troop types, but HI bonuses currently vary wildly from Lombard HI getting +10% morale and +10% offense to Housecarls getting +40% offense and +20% morale and Druzhinas getting +10% offense, +50% defense, and +20% morale.

That said, thanks for taking away Archers' maxim guns, and on the whole, looks like this is gonna be a great patch.

Yeah... although don't forget there are cultures out there with 100% LI retinues, or mixed LI/A, so the Byzzies haven't hit rock bottom yet. TBH I think more than anything cultural tactics need a re-visioning to make the crappier cultural retinues worth using.

For my game I put the bonuses back to where they were pre-2.2 nerf (ie, +60% offense for Caballeros), *and* gave cultural retinues a +20% morale boost. I figured it'd make your best units a little harder to kill, and it's an added incentive for me to use whichever cultural retinue is there. It's not perfect, but it definitely makes things a bit more interesting. The only downside is the AI tends to NOT use their cultural retinues, which makes me feel like I'm cheating a bit...

This is a huge changelog with major improvements, but I appreciate all the tiny quality of life improvements too. Proper Latin papal names, finally! Now we just need dynasty names to be morphable for male/female...

As for cataphracts, they already cost way more than they were worth. Now they're probably even more useless. :p

Thank you for posting all those. There is a lot to think on. Some thoughts:

  • I know that delinking events from de jur is listed as a minor change but to me that is major.
  • Some basic AI military improvements such as no longer moving smaller units before large units is an encouraging thing
  • I have mixed feelings on weakening the light cavalry - intuitively seems to punish Cataphracts vs new HL troops right out of the gate
  • I am very disappointed with the small "History" section - glad to see Norway worked on but no Flanders or Khazar de jur corrections? Seriously, Norway needed these corrections more than either of these others?
  • " - Blocked the subjugation CB against rebels" I see your correcting potential exploits even before release. Good.

- It is now possible to gain the Crusader/Mujahid trait as a character of any religion participating in a Crusade/Jihad.- Reduced size of savegames ( up to 15% smaller lategame )

I don't know anything about programming, but I'm curious how what sounds like such a trivial detail increased the save game size by such a large degree.

I don't know anything about programming, but I'm curious how what sounds like such a trivial detail increased the save game size by such a large degree.

not sure if joking, but here goes: It didnt - that part about reducing save game sizes is a new point, it was just not properly moved down to a new line. i.e. it should have looked like this:
-It is now possible to gain the Crusader/Mujahid trait as a character of any religion participating in a Crusade/Jihad.
- Reduced size of savegames (up to 15 % smaller lategame )

So was the issue of random top lieges getting different religion friends and then converting addressed? And what about random creation of Theocracies in previously existing kingdoms/empires, did we ever discover a way to stop that?

Overall it looks like a solid patch though. Hopefully those optimizations come through.

Abrahamic religions should probably have a negative vassal opinion modifier for being friends with infidels.

People of other religion that are not part of the same realm then you, usually don't accept to educate an hostage.
