Not to mention the "can't make it toooooo smart" aspect of the job since a smart ai would day 1 crush the player as the biggest threat, etc. which would trigger howls of outrage rather than proper appreciation of a smart ai...

I don't think we're at a point where there's a risk of the AI being too smart (yet). I'm fairly sure Wiz is trying to make it as good as possible.

I don't think we're at a point where there's a risk of the AI being too smart (yet). I'm fairly sure Wiz is trying to make it as good as possible.

For us to be at that point, computers themselves need to be much better. You can use some tricks to improve how the AI plays it, but if you made it consider too many things x100's of tags the game will bog down even on great machines, and this game's player demographic is not "great machines only".

Paradox definitely needs more than one AI "wizard" (though Wiz will always be THE wizard). With so many new projects going at once, and DLCs changing core aspects of existing games, requirements for AI creating and coding will never end.

Congrats! I think the EU4 AI is superb, I actually consider it the gold standard out of all the strategy games I've played. I also think it's the most important aspect of EU4 so I'm excited to see you as lead. I hope you can keep improving everything.

Even without the AI being smarter, clearly a single human in a world full of current-technology AIs is the biggest threat and should be eliminated above all else. That is known before the game starts so doesn't even require any intelligence from the AI if you allow it to know that a particular country is human-controlled. The only exception would be if the game's victory conditions were about the condition of the world as a whole rather than the performance of your own country.

Yeah. If the AI was really playing to win all of them would immediately band together to reduce the human to a vassalized OPM and intervene whenever said human tried to break free.

Now *that* would be something I'd like to see in a 6-player Paradox Office Multiplayer game....

I don't think 6 will be enough. Think of a few of the most powerful starts and the issues with them:

France, day 1 all your vassals will declare independence, same for Denmark and their Unions. And of course Burgundy will jump on you.

Castille, Aragon and Portugal will gang up on you asap, and Granada will jump on that.

Austria, all your neighbours will declare war on you.

Muscovy, both Novgorod and Kazan will declare on you.

Ottomans, you'll be in a war against the Mamluks, Venice, Byzantium, Crimea and QQ.

While it's an interesting concept, I'm going to guess you need more than 6 players. Unless you pick 6 Neighbours so any natural enemies are players (say France/England/Burgundy/Castille/Aragon/Portugal or Austria) but even then, the moment you take 1 province everyone who gets 1 AE will join an coalition against you, so there won't be much expansion, just a desperate struggle for survival.

Hmm actually that would be fun, not EUIV at all, but fun :).

Edit: I say program this Wiz, we want to see it, can't be that hard to make since there's no need for balance here. Make the AI automatically hostile to all players, set the coalition requirements to simply needing 1 AE and lets see the AI destroy those developers!

Maybe introduce new game mode in DLC. Horde mode/Survival or whatever. All human players are attacked by AI controlled players. Normal rules for peace and truce applies. No alliances. Personal Unions/Vassals may happen but only as a result of peace treaty, event. Starting vassals and personal unions are broken at the start of game. ;)
