Was watching a Lets Play after the embargo was lifted today and this caught my attention.


"I was very tempted to play Carthage, I'm gonna wait though until, I think it's patch 1.1 comes out because it adds a lot more stuff to naval combat. Right now it's a bit bare bones"

I don't know where/how he got this information, I'm not familiar with him as a player/content creator so I don't know what kind of access he might have to any inside circles but just thought I'd put this out there incase it is true. Then any people who were left a bit empty by naval combat *might* have something to look forward to (no idea how extensive the changes will be).

I have no idea why I can't place the video in with a timestamp, but he starts talking about it briefly at 1:14.

Other streamers confirmed this too. One of them said that PDX confirmed it in an email to him or something...

Well, that's interesting then. I was fully certain that Paradox were going to revise naval combat at some point but I expected it in some kind of DLC as it's quite an easy thing to sell to people interested in the naval side of antiquity. I am super glad though that they intend to add to it in a free patch; it tells me they knew the system was a little plain and intended to work on it.

"But why didn't they just do it properly before release" - Some things need to take a hit so more work can be done on other things. I think naval combat is a good thing to "sacrifice" until post release as there will be a large number of players who will just not have that much interest in naval combat or care for its mechanics. It's not really an integral part of the game and you can enjoy it without it, so I think it makes sense to put it on the backburner until you have more time (without a release deadline infront of you)

as mentioned at the end of the latest Dev-Clash (it should be pretty obvious even without a mention though), the final release version of the game is already done and ready to be shipped, so any changed at this point (and probably any bigger changes they came up with in, like, the last week or so) are inevitably going to wait for the first hot patch (or, in case of the naval stuff, the first content patch) after release

Do you have some info to back it or are you just guessing? When do you expect such "content" patch to be released: within week or after month or two.
Because thare are a lot other issues, like reworking mercenaries, truce breaking etc. which Pdx acknowledged they are working on and although Johan did not confirm how soon they will patch them (the question asked was will be on the release day) my reading was that it will be rather sooner than later.

They have stated in one of the streams (saw it myself) that the final version of the game has already been sent to Steam and there is a patch in the works which addresses mercenaries among other things. They didn't specify when it would come, only "soon™", so that could mean within a few days, or within a couple of weeks. It can also be logically assumed that this naval patch is a part of the same thing.

EDIT: Oh, and Johan explicitly stated that it would not be a day one patch.

Many of the fixes/changes won't come on a day one patch, but believe me there will be a day one patch. We won't be playing on the same version they sent to steam, thats for sure :D

And how do you know that, Flamur?

Because in the history of Paradox there has not been a game that they have not patched on day one (we have basically never played the v1.0 they've sent Steam *and I'm incredibly confident saying this but there could be an exception*)

And it's not just Paradox, it's just how game development works. They have to send a "gold" copy of the game to Steam many. many weeks in advance of the release date so Steam can ensure there are no issues with the client/game. In the gap between when they've sent their v1.0 to Steam, and release date, they keep working on the game. Between then and now, they have uncovered loads of bugs and errors that they've put in a day one patch. Some easy balance changes will be in there, too. Some of the more complex issues, such as mercenary balancing and/or naval combat will most likely be saved for a later patch.

I can't remember the last time I played a game that just flat out didn't have a day one patch. Was many moons ago, when discs were still around lol

I suppose it's possible that we could get it on day one, or at least some sort of patch on day one other than 1.1. It wouldn't be the first time that Johan or PDX has changed their mind.

I'm not referring to patch 1.1 - that most definitely will come later. I'm talking about a 1.01 or 1.02 (depending on how many patches they've made internally) etc to deal with the bugs and the errors they've uncovered since. Patches 1.X (1,2,3 etc) are usually fairly significant content patches, not "just" balance/fix patches.

Yeah i haven't heard it from paradox yet, so i do wonder where he got that from.
If he was on the Beta team he would likely have access to this information. Future plans for patches are worked and discussed with Beta teams.

Other than that, maybe the Press/Content Creators were emailed about this for their press release versions of the game. After all it's some positive publicity for Imperator: Rome and will help to sell more copies if the Press get the word out there that a major patch will be available from Day 1. It's a classic tactic.

Wouldn't this be kind of breaking the NDA? I doubt they would allow that somebody talks so freely about it as beta tester.
