It's also interesting to consider the political ramifications of this disaster. Can you imagine if a government lost 216K men in a plan like this? Alright, the OP was playing Germany so the government wasn't going to fall but Goering certainly would be sacked. Imagine if the USA today dropped a division over Mosul and they got shot up. There would be congressional hearings, major resignations/firings and calls for Trump to be impeached. In all military operations which take place behind enemy lines there are huge risks. You could argue Carter lost the election because his rescue mission for the Iranian hostages failed and a helicopter blew up. Obama had to heavily weight the risks in the Zero Dark Thirty operation. Look at the mess that unfolded surrounding the events in Black Hawk Down. All of these examples are far, far smaller than an operation involving 200K men and 24 divisions.
