Hi Gaius,

What you need to research is primarily under Heavy Aircraft Tech. You must research Airborne Warfare, Gliders, Airborne Glider training, Paratroopers. To get gliders you need to first research Nylon under Industrial Research, and Paratrooper Warfare Equipment under Infantry Research.

It takes awhile to get there and is usually not a great way to spend Germany's IC at the beginning of '36, but I guess that advice is all relative.

You have to be very careful with Paratroopers. They're pretty expensive to build, but not prohibitive. What is prohibitive is the cost of the transport planes you need to use to carry them. Now, it's been a long time since I've played anything but CORE, so my numbers may be off, but transport planes tend to be more expensive to build than anything shy of a battleship or a late-war tank. You have to be very careful where and how you use them.

That said, they are invaluable for taking low-infrastructure provinces (redeploy to get them out of there without taking damage), and for facilitating rapid encirclements. After you take a province, you can paradrop troops into the next province you want to enter (it will usually be undefended unless it's also along the front lines) to allow your spearheads to advance even faster.

One more little tip: Don't load up your paratroopers until you're ready for the paradrop. They will lose strength and organization while they are loaded.

See my sig for a true example of my character...

When it comes to Paratroop transports, I think their cost is nuts. I always edit the cost down, but not the time. Even by doing that, they still are expensive, and also more flexible than I expect. One transport group can carry more than one unit of paras, so they are pretty good in that respect. I just hate waiting for the org to hit max to use paratroops. I also hate that you can't unload a unit of paras if they are on the planes unless they are at max org. I've had the transports get intercepted, and lose the battle (I do have escorts with them) and then return to base, and I can't unload the troops!!!

Anyway, I do love paras, and I understand why they have the features that they do in the game, but I'm just not really keen on all of the limitations.

The high cost of air transport units reflects the enormous amount of airplanes that they needed:

Take-off was uneventful, and the 434th Group, after forming up with hundreds of other gliders and tow planes from other troop carrier groups, headed for the continent. Little did we know that this day would turn out to be "Bloody Tuesday." Before the morning was over, seventeen of the gliders were forced to ditch in dense fog over the channel, five others crashed over land because of bad weather, dozens of others were cut loose or broke loose over Belgium, and seventeen C-47s were shot down by enemy flak fire over Holland. Of the 385 gliders that had left England carrying members of the 101st Airborne Division, only 209 made it to the LZ in Holland.

Counting gliders, C-47s for para, and tow planes for the gliders and you easily have 500+ airplanes for one para div. They should cost a lot especially since gliders are one use things in real life while in the game you can re use air transports in about two weeks.

If i am not mistaken when i played with paratroopers... I believe the best time to use the is when u have military access to USSR (paratroopers need surply to redply) then declare war against it allies... and take only the key locations.... The planes suck.... and i am not so sure if i would like to go even odds with normal troops (like 5 paratroopers against 5 troops)

my 2 cents

It's impossible to DOW the USSR and then expect to land paratroopers in every single one of their VP provinces 1 hour later. Unless of cource you're Andrew_CLT, but he was the U.S. and had nukes. Paratroopers aren't supposed to go 1 on 1 with other divisions either.

Para

I was playing as the US and loaded up Paras on the Island at the top(sorry name escapes me- ATTU ?) I then got access to the USSR and did a massive paradrop on Japan - for some reason most of japan was undefended and I just walked right in (but the US is the only nation I had the ICs to build the transports.)

A really dumb question.

I have just managed to load paratroops onto a transport plane. I then moved the plane to where I wanted it. But now I can't unload the frigging thing. It says "Click to unload". But no matter where I click or how I click nothing happens! Grrrrrrrr - wretched documentation.

Heeeeeeelp?

Wait until the plane reaches full org again and pray that your troops didn't starve/choke on airline food in the meantime, then click to unload.
The FAQ will also give you a lot of information on how to use para's (and a lot of other things). :)
