If you are loading paratroopers by right-clicking and selecting 'OK' in the pop-up menu that appears, be sure not to try this with troops ALREADY loaded. They can unfortunaly be selected, and trying to load the a second time will chrash the game instantly to desktop... 
If you have selected troops already onboard planes, they will have a skull indicating 'out of supplies' or something.
