Maybe an event for great nations during the reformation where if they've converted to Protestantism/Reformed faith they get an event where some distant relative who has remained Catholic tries to stage a coup. Obviously with support from 'defender of the faith' and the papacy.

Should really shake things up a bit ^^

Personally, there are far, far too many "lost stab and slider moves" for my taste. Sometimes, I'd like my sliders to stay the way they are, and not get mucked about on a yearly basis! :) A "negative" (read: wrong direction) slider moves takes ages to correct.

It can be frustrating, but that's the point. With big empires it requires serious strategic planning, which I like

I hope someone at Paradox HQ has a big spreadsheet of all these random events and is keeping a balance of how many raise or lower stability, how many alter each slider, how many bad events versus how many good events in general there are. :)

Might suggest some ideas too - for example there are seemingly dozens of events that can change the innovative/narrowminded slider, but are there any that change the land/naval one? Or the aristocratic/plutocratic one?

Sale of Titles
My lord, we are short of money, and one of your advisors has suggested selling off titles of nobility to anyone who can afford to pay. It would bring in lots of money if we do, but it would devalue the idea of nobility and perhaps upset the existing aristocratic families. Should we do this?

1) Ka-ching! Gain three months' income, gain +1 plutocratic.
2) Nobility cannot be bought! Gain +1 stability, +1 aristocratic.

There is zero strategic planning in "whoops, another event killed your planning just because". ;)

Yes there is. Planning on westernising? Maybe you should take your slider beyond the setting it needs to go to to be sure a random event doesn't set you back ten years. Considering whether to build temples or not? Events which might destablise you are definitely a factor in that.

Planning to cope with the unexpected is the practically the definition of strategising.

Sure, I'm not against them on principle. Every once in a while, fine. But a yearly random slider change? Why bother with your own slider movements in that (admittedly, extreme) case?

Who said anything about a yearly random slider change?

A couple of positive events to balance out the stability hits:

Title - A travelling minstrel
Description - A renowned minstrel recently crossed our nation's borders. His intention is to roam our country bringing joy to all who hear him, but some say only your ears are fit to hear such wonderful music.
Trigger - Any. Or maybe just western and eastern tech groups, I'm not sure.
Option 1 - Allow him to go where his heart wishes (+1 stability)
Option 2 - Bring him to court (gain 5* artist)

Title - A bountiful harvest
Description - This year's harvests have been exceptional! Rarely in our nation's history has the earth brought forth so much of its bounty. The populace are already interpreting this as a sign that we are enjoying divine favour.
Trigger - Any
Option 1 - We are blessed! (gain 1 stability)
Option 2 - This will bring a tidy profit on the market! (gain 50 ducats)

I got some triggered modifiers i would like to see added to the Knights of St.John.
They have totally ignored in EuIII since the beginning.

Triggered modifier: European Estates
Due to the vast estates owned throughout Europe and funding/donations from the catholic countries, The Knights get an extra boost to their income. This income will make a difference when the country is small, but won’t do much when/if the country would grow.
Trigger Description: Our vast European estates generate extra income to our treasury, manpower and prestige.
Trigger: Country is= The Knights, Country is=Catholic, Year is= less than 1650
Triggered effects: Capital +2 tax income, Capital Manpower +1000, Country Force limit +1, Country ship limit +1, Country prestige +1%.
Losing the effect: If year 1650(+- a few years) then:
Triggered event: Estates confiscated!
Description: Due to the increasing rise of Protestantism and jealousy among the European nobles, many of our holdings and estates has been confiscated. We must look for coin elsewhere.

-------

Triggered event: War against a Christian nation
The Knights should get severe penalties for waging war against other Christian nations.
Trigger description: We are involved in a war against a Christian nation. This is unacceptable; according to knight law we are not to shed blood from anyone of the true faith!
Trigger: Country is=The Knights, Country is=Catholic, Country is at war against nation that has religion=Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, Reformed
Triggered effect: Tax income -15%, Manpower modifier -15%, Infamy +0,5/month, prestige -1%/month.

-------

Triggered event: War against Islamic countries
Description: We are at war against an Islamic nation. We must defend our last outpost to the bitter end! God wills it!
Trigger: Country is=The Knights, is a one province minor, is Catholic, at war against country religion Sunni, Shiite
Triggered effect: Local fort defensiveness +500%

first of all: I'm german, so please excuse my rather incorrect english...

There are a lot of possible events for the HRE as they were reforming a lot during the centuries. I'M posting just three of them by now but if you [PI ;)] or anyone else is interested in the history of german and the empire's law I can add maybe 20 or more events. :)
(I'm studying german law and therefore the history of the law of the HRE)

Title: Prosecutor of the Empire ["Reichsfiskal"]
Description: The emperor is weak! To uphold his laws and rights it's preferable to hand over the controlling of these to a prosecutor.
Trigger: It has to be at least 1421, you have to be emperor of the HRE.
Button: Choose between having a prosecutor and not having one.
Effect: -heir +stability -revolt risk +tax -prestige -relations to the electors of the HRE
Information: In the year 1421 the Empire created a new civil service post for the emperor to prevent his laws being broken or his rights being disobeyed. Unfortunately this was understood as an impairmant though the emperor didn't seem to be capable of maintaining his own administration.

Title: Taxation for the Empire ["Reichssteuer"]
Description: The emperor is in need of money to maintain the structures of the Holy Roman Empire!
Trigger: It has to be at least 1471, you have to be emperor of the HRE
Button: Choose between enabling taxation and not.
Effect: +stability cost modifier +revolt risk +tax +all members of the HRE get a modifier transferring a small part of their income to the emperor
Information: In the year 1471 the Empire introduced both a wartax and a civil tax aiming to maintain the structures and preventing opposing nation from declaring war on the HRE.

Title: Freedom and Peace for the Empire ["Ewiger Landfriede"]
Description: All members of the HRE will have to swear the emperor eternal peace. If they do, they can't declare war on the emperor anymore.
Trigger: It has to be at least 1495, you have to be emperor of the HRE
Button: Choose between enabling enacting or not.
Effect: +stability (emperor) +revolt risk (members) +all members of the HRE get a modifier removing the possibility of declaring war on the emperor.
Information: In the year 1495 there was the Diet to Worms reforming the HRE. There are more events based on the Diet possible like
  • superior Court of Justic ["Reichskammergericht"]
  • order of executing ["Reichsexekutionsordnung"]
  • a new taxation system ["Gemeiner Pfennig"]

In the spirit of an event with no slider moves or stab hits, broad applicability, and several choices.

Title = Local Initiative

Option 2 = Hey, I'm the one in charge here!
National stability cost -10% for 2 years
[keeping people in their place is good for stability]

Option 3 = Clearly they have too much time on their hands… Tax them.
+10% Tax in province for 1 year
+20% stability cost in province for 1 year
[money in exchange for a bit of local unrest]

Title = Foreign Military Expert

Description = Our country is at war, but our leadership is not ready! Today a foreign military expert arrived in our court. His reputation precedes him and has a reasonable grasp of our language but his prices are steep. What should we do with him?

Trigger = nation is at war, land tradition less than 20

Option 1 = Ask him to train our officers
Lose 100 ducats
Gain 5-star Sergeant Major general

Who said anything about a yearly random slider change?

- Implemented a system for giving countries a yearly random event.

If we assume all the posts here will be counted (I'm pretty sure they won't), that will mean a yearly hugely unbalancing random event. No thanks, that's far too much randomness for my taste. Small event effects, like +5 prestige, 1 month of +X TE, something like that. Things that don't upset your entire planning on a yearly basis.

Planning to cope with the unexpected is the practically the definition of strategising.

Two scenarios: the random events are either balanced (so, on average they don't shift you in any direction). Then, they can't be planned for, and just add random noise (extra years) to your plans. Might be nice every once in a while (like it is pre-yesterday's patch), but too much to regular stuff. Two: the random events shift you (on average) in a direction. That you need to plan for, but it could be bad gaming: If I know one slider will move in one direction always, the slider direction needs to be much better for me to even invest slider moves into it.
