Completing the Psionic Ascension path turned my biological species into robots, with my leaders retaining their psionic traits but my civilian species being reduced to basic tier robots that can't work specialist or ruler jobs.
RIP this run.

You got me Paradox, you trolled me good. I was actually peeing myself laughing at this glitch for a good few minutes.

With that said, and on a more serious note, this is also where I'm officially quitting 2.2.3 entirely. Between this glitch, and the Gaia terraforming one that destroys districts, I'm kinda tired of losing runs to elements completely out of my control.

Wow, that might top the last reason I quit a 2.2.3 game - when I found that war exhaustion wasn't being calculated correctly. I'm sure Paradox reads these general posts but this should also go in the bug report forum.

This is hilarious. I never trust a beta, I'm glad I didn't waste time over it.

Well here's the thing, I can't recall any truly game breaking bugs in any of the beta patches before 2.2. The worst was probably when a neighboring empire used two gas giants as an unofficial black hole to bypass my defensive stations, but beyond that the glitches were usually minor, like visual bugs and such.

2.2 & 2.2.3 feel like they got rushed out the door before Christmas (and more importantly, the Steam Winter Sale) dropped. I think if this patch had come out at any other time, these bugs would have lasted maybe a week before getting patched out. But because it's the holidays and everyone's off on vacation, I suspect we'll be stuck with 2.2.3's mess for at least another couple of weeks. I'll gladly eat my words if a fix drops tomorrow, but I somehow doubt it.

Well, I've done psi ascension in 2.2_beta, so at least it's not broken all the time (like gaia forming apparently is).
The bug itself sounds like the come-back of a very old one, where psi ascension transforms all your pops into the last created species. Which should be the psionic template of your species, but it could go horribly wrong at times.
You should definitely open a bug report with before & after save in this case.

does anyone know when the devs are supposed to come back so we know when to expect some work on the game? between the day 1 stuttering, the mid game lag, and the countless ai not doing anything bugs, and now this, the game is completely broken...

This didn't happen me, but I had three robots I wanted to purge to please my spiritualists, so I set their citizenship to "Undesirables". The game instead set it to "Assimilation". I now have three psionic robots in my empire.

Psionic robots sound so flavorful! That's a feature, not a bug!

On basic inspection, yeah, immortal psionic robots sounds neat. But keep in mind that basic robots can't work specialist or ruler jobs, which is what's ruined my economy and thus the run. I also didn't have robots researched at all in this run, so absolutely best case scenario, my next engineering card draw lets me research Droids, and I have to endure 5+ years of no research/alloy production, and can pretty much kiss all ruler jobs goodbye for the rest of the run (I also was trying out Aristocratic Elite with this run, so not having rulers hurts even more).

But knowing my luck, it'd have taken 30 years to finally get the Droid tech card, and my economy can't take that, even with a commanding lead. This is also considering the very obvious fact that psionic robots is wholly lore breaking.

I remember that when (I think it was) 2.0 was launched purging didn't give you any resources rendering both devouring swarms and mass exterminators virtually unplayable. I'd say that was pretty game breaking (but also fixed pretty quickly). And I think there were a few others, not as bad and many as in 2.2 though.

Did they give nothing at one point? I recall the unity giving part being a bit flaky, but the food/energy parts always seemed to work for me.

I looked it up and you can find it in the 2.0.1 patch notes:
- Fixed processing/grid amalgamation/livestock purge types being broken

But as I said it was fixed pretty quickly so you may just have missed it if you didn't play any such empires in that week or so. It wasn't a big deal but I can remember thinking "how the hell did that come through QC", because at least I, consider these to be among of the major play styles and just playing one of them for 2 hrs should have caught it.
