People questioning out why I peaced out so soon didn't see all the back-door diplomacy that was happening at the time. I saw Mughals and Mamelukes going "YES YES! HOLD HIM IN YOUR UNION!" so I saw the perfect opportunity to unite the Eastern Claims of Russia with the Fatherland again.

Frankly, I'm surprised that Johan has managed to survive until now, considering the Ottomans and the Bahmanis have tons of cards on him. Not to mention the Russian menace, since there still exists a Russian enclave within Mughal lands.
Perhaps Yonaz is just holding off until there are only a few decades left to grab those lands, so that the western powers don't have much time to react to the leaderboard changes.
Well, that, or the subconscious feeling of "don't piss off the bossman"

I'm not entirely incompetent in diplomacy. I kept OE, MAM and Bahmanis as my friends for as long as I could.

The power of Fritaly is such that they brought the Anglo-Ibero-Burgundian alliance to their knees without a fight and they kicked the Mamluks out of the war by just showing up.

Speaking of which, surely the Mamluks could have done better...

If by "could have done better", you mean "could have stayed in the war longer" .. sure, but to what end?
The best possible outcome of that war, especially with Italy in it, would be some minor border adjustments in our favour. To be perfectly honest, that's not an outcome that benefits me much, if at all, at this time and in this strategic situation.

Mamluks are way behind in score. How do you plan on competing for even the third place at this rate?
Also Groogy could have taken so much more than peacing out Italy so fast. Groogy could have secured provinces in Hungary for free, maybe Bohemia, and negotiated with the Mamluks and Mughals for those Russian territories also. Johan would probably have given those away just to hold Italy.

Quite frankly, I don't see any real possibility for it at this time.
Certainly, that war didn't look like it (when Italy joined that is)
