Well, I see the propaganda Groogy has been set loose. I wanted to free french land to their real owners. BUT a unholy alliance were created to stop the freedom of the french people. There were no expansion possibility for France anywhere else while England was taking the natives land. It had to be done but now... nothing will happen. If freeing the French people was your goal, why did you say that your goal was a French-Burgundian-Austrian alliance 'against the East', or that you'd let France and Burgundy do as they please in the West (read: conquer it all)? It seems to me that you're simply not willing to engage in any conflict with France and Burgundy regardless of self-interest or anything else. I'm certain at this point I could offer you every single French and Burgundian province and you'd still turn it down.

Until I'm out of France, at which point they're already stronger than us and can take us down without your help, which you explicitly did not care about, so it obviously has nothing to do with any kind of balance of power.

It's funny. The Austrian AI does this a lot. They'll back the French horse until that horse starts knocking on the HRE door because it has nowhere else left to expand

Austria is boxed in by Bohemia, Hungary, Milan (then Spain below), and Burgundy. There's only so much more you can squeeze out of the middle of Italy or punching up the west of Germany. France is stifled going west but did make progress towards the south east. I kind of agree in not understanding the rationale, but then I'm not there discussing it. To me, the very logical move for Austria is into Burgundy and by extension southeast France. I suppose there's logic in trying to redirect France back the other way, but that seems like a fool's errand when the alternative - trounce them and grow off of it - seems far better.

The problem is that supporting France/Burgundy necessarily means creating a superior power directly on your border. Partitioning France results in a balance of power to your west, with Spain checked a little by Portugal and an awful lot by Britain, and with France/Burgundy pummeled you are free to claim the central-west of Europe as your own and keep pace. Unless you plan to turn on Milan and either (or both) Bohemia or Hungary, I don't understand what you can even do in that spot with an empowered France. You're literally surrounded by Humans every single one of which has better expansion potential than you.

Yeah - instead of having the entire West be dependent on him, Austria wants to make himself dependent on France and Burgundy. It's completely irrational but there's not much I can do about that.

EDIT: To put it in context, there were two offers for Austria on the table today. My alliance offered Naples if he'd help us take back three provinces in Spain for Spain, after which he'd go back to guaranteering both sides.

Outcome: My alliance slightly weakened, their alliance slightly weakened, Austria slightly strengthened.

The other offer was for him to join France and Burgundy, get Naples, and FRA+BUR would take 10-15 provinces from me, after which he'd leave France and Burgundy free to pummel us until we were gone.

Outcome: My alliance vanishes, France and Burgundy massively massively strengthened, Austria slightly strengthened.

Which looks like a better deal to Austria?

Going after players purely for how they placed last time is a fool's errand - look at yonaz, who is now super-strong in Bahmanis, and the power vacuum in East Europe that emerged. The only ones who benefit from a power vacuum are the ones there to fill it, and you can't win just by having a strategy for someone else to lose.
