Ever tried with an propane tank and an open flame?

You can make a cat bark with that. You'll see your cat go "Woof" in no time.

Tried that experiment involuntarily at home one night. Cooking burgers on the grill, went inside, when I came back outside the grill was ingulfed in flames and the connector hose had burned through. The tank was gouting flame quite nicely, but was not trying to lift off.

Nonetheless, it made for an interesting few minutes.

The easiest thing to do would be to order a Water rocket that is propeelled by pumping up the air pressure in it.

Otherwise, you will have to experiment with Baking Soda/Water... or weaker, heavier unlikey to work: Dry Ice/Water (good for delayed explosions though).

Otherwise I do not understand how your teacher expects you to do a safe project involving propulsion. I guess a baloon and a rolled up card board tube might work: Make a rocket out of a cardboard tube, and blow a balon up inside it, then set it on a rod and let it go.

D'oh!!!!!!!!! Or VERy easy: order a model rocket.

Under any circumstances I do not recommend playing with Water and Lithium... unless you have some way to isolate the Lithium from the water until you are away from it.

It explodes and showers you with shrapnel and flames. Make sure you have the video camera running.

For a rocket, you need a slow controlled burn, not a rapid oxidization such as a firecracker. If you can get your hands on some det cord or fuse material that might work better (although I'm no expert, so act at your own risk).

If you need to send something up just to send it up, then compressed air is your best bet, like somebody said. You can just pump a bunch of air into an empty 2 liter bottle and it will take off

If you're trying to get a cardboard rocket or something like that into the sky, don't use firecrackers, use a model rocket engine
