I have a feeling that there's way more people than Paradox thinks who buy the games and never visit the forums (because they just play casually or they just aren't interested in online communities) who miss out on all the changes you guys make in beta patches. I think it's completely unfair to short-change these people just because they don't know to register on your message board. They paid the same money as everyone else for your games and deserve the same support. Beta patches for stuff like Deus Vult, Semper Fi, and Heir to the Throne probably don't even reach half your audience. It can only help, not hurt, to just release final versions of patches once you're satisfied with them. The more people who have access to them, the less that bitch elsewhere about bugs. At the bare minimum, you should link to beta patches, advertising them as optional beta patches, in the launchers.

Just my two cents.

I'm sure Paradox is well aware that most of their customers don't visit the forum. I think the responses in this thread are aimed at the people who are complaining and who obviously do visit the forum. This isn't a defense of their position though; I'm rather disappointed at what seems like a flippant response from Johan. Has Virtual Programming been told this is the final patch and been given the code so they can port it to MacOS?

I also agree with this sentiment. I think FPS games which I do enjoy from time to time, are more likely by far to attract the 13-15 year old crowd that will spend hours scouring the internet for pirated copies of games they'll only play for a couple weeks.

Games that require a great deal of thinking are more likely to attract people able to do a great deal of thinking, who probably have a good paying job and don't want to waste valuable personal time searching for pirated software that is as likely as not to not work correctly, or have a virus. They also don't always want to waste valuable time searching through forums trying to figure out which beta version is the latest, etc.

This is a great idea. Another strategy game, Battle for Wesnoth does this. That way, those uncomfortable with the instability a beta implies don't have to worry and those who want to try the cutting edge can access it easily.

For some of us installing this patch is not as easy as some are touting it up to be the file is in rar format so windows won't auto extract it your going to lose some people right there. I did do a google search and found there are programs to extract this file type but only one company I recognize and they want $30 to buy it. While I also see some for free im not a big fan of randomly downloading files from companies I don't recongize. This is one reason while whatever you want to call it beta final or what have you even if they keep it in the tech forum or whatever at least an auto extractor would be a big help to some of us who are not tech savy. As a side note can anyone recomend a safe extractor program so I can try out this patch if so thank you.

I have winrar. It always tells me I'm supposed to pay for something when I open it, but it hasn't stopped extracting my files yet, after a few years. I don't think I downloaded it illegally, either. Maybe just something broken, though.

WinRar is technically shareware which means you are supposed to pay for it after the trial period expires. Like WinZip though, they are nice enough to not actually disable the software after the trial period, just pop up a nag screen. If you want compression software that is actually free, look at 7-Zip and IZArc.

So, anyone have a good reason not to just make the last beta an official patch once it's determined that a)there are no gamebreaking bugs and b)work is being stopped on the game?

It takes time and money to "certify" an official patch release. With a beta patch you can just crack out some fixes and release it with the warning it's "as is". After a certain point there is no more money or (official) time to spend on a game and it's considered done, but sometimes people work on them in their spare time and that work turns into beta patches.

As I said earlier in the thread it is not a matter of "Shall we make an official patch or just let it sit in beta forever?", it's "I finished my main tasks and had some spare time to work on HttT last night so I'll release it as a beta patch". If you somehow convinced Johan not to use beta patches anymore the result wouldn't be more official patches, you'd have the same official patches and then that would be it. Beta patches are considered entirely "Bonus material", not a step towards another official patch. If you can't or won't install them, or never even hear about them because you don't use the forum, that is up to you, you still have the official releases. You can argue people should only release games with no bugs, or every game should be patched forever until it's perfect if you like, but it simply isn't possible.

Even if they are bonus material Darkrenown, wouldn't it make sense to have them displayed more prominently or even advertised through the launcher? I couldn't give a flying one wether the same patch is called beta or official, but it does seem some people are not aware of them.

Possibly, although it's not up to me :) But the more you officially advertise it the more I think you would be expected to support it fully. Even if you put a big flashing red "this is a beta" warning on it I think a lot of people would see it being on the launcher as an official seal of quality.

Yeah, I see your point. In my experience though, there are beat patches and there are release candidates. Beta patches tend to be of high quality, by their nature release candidates tend to have outstanding issues. Of course some people will complain no matter what, but that's just the way this (and every other gaming forum) is.

Even if this is the case, isn't the newest beta (especially if jdrou's fixes can be included) more deserving of that seal of quality than the latest official version? Especially if you add "will crash on exit" to the big flashing red warning. :D AFAIK, at least this beta has no major issues of the official one's muslim westernization's magnitude.

Beta patches are considered entirely "Bonus material", not a step towards another official patch. If you can't or won't install them, or never even hear about them because you don't use the forum, that is up to you, you still have the official releases.

I hate to moan as I've had no problem using the betas, but shouldn't you have said this when the betas started rolling in? Or, if the original intention was to make one more official patch (as Johan seemed to suggest as late as July), inform us when that plan changed? 99 % of the forum users, including for instance prominent modders and some who seem to read everything here, were under the impression that an official patch was coming until yesterday, so I don't think I've just been inattentive. It should be obvious that being misinformed is a problem for the MP and modding communities (with people waiting for the official patch).

EDIT: And having more people know of the "bonus material" should be good for you, as well as the players. People are going to get a better impression of HTTT if they play it with this "free bonus material", so they're going to be happier with Paradox and more likely to get more titles.

??? This is not Free Software, where you can say "Use it at your own risk" and walk away. People pay for the stuff! If it has bugs they have to be fixed. You can stop adding new features in (free) patches and keep them for (paid) expansions, but bugs must be fixed.

1) Name one game that has absolutely, totally no bug in it.
2) Name one bug in the latest 'official' HTTT patch that is game breaking.

Just speaking for myself, the 4/29 patch is essential. The change in fleet retreats is, in itself, the best naval feature added to EUIII, that is, all the way back to 1.0. I wouldn't play without it.

Obviously, since I have my own mod, & since it's based on 4.1b-4/29, I'd like everyone to have access to that version. But if it's not feasible, then OK.

May we assume that features of that patch will be in DW?

Considering that 4.0 is absolutely broken, and 4.1 fixes all of those mistakes, I would say you can put your money down to make it official. Its no secret that you use the beta patches as digital rights management. You give people with a registered CD key the fixed game, and people who don't register their CD key or come come on the forums have to endure a broken game. Just look at CK Deus Vult.

Really, making progressive patches is the way it should be done. Every other company uses beta patches to get community feedback from an unstable version. Are you trying to say you use them to avoid liability? That's a comforting thought.

Why should Paradox switch from supporting the majority to supporting the minority? Where is the money in that?
The game itself is targeted at minorities. No other game company will waste the time making grand strategy games for a few thousand people. So, keep hoping they keep away from the "majority rules" attitude, or you'll be play "Europa: the medieval first person shooter"
