Getting a place to stay in Cologne during Gamescom can be a pain, I booked mine (no joke) September last year after the last Gamescom. Best bet is maybe to look at Colognes short-distance traffic service, the site is sadly only partly in english, but the trains extend to various cities in the vicinity of Cologne where it's maybe a little easier to get affordable hotels and get to gamescom/Fangathernig via train in 30-45 minutes.

Yes, they are! Preferably in an Ulm T-Shirt, rambling about how Pdox killed Ulm by changing their CoA!
Btw I also live about 45 minutes by train from Köln Messe, but i fear that inviting some nerdy strangers to sleep here would kind of result in a slightly angered wife and confused kids... so i can't really help on that "where to stay"-problem...

I am not sure yet, which appartement i am going to have during the time, so i don´t know exactly how it will be going down, but that will certainly be no problem!
I got lots of folding mattresses etc around, so things will be sorted out for a stay
