Does one need to have a separate ticket for the Gamescom event too, or is it possible to show up just for this?

You should not need to have a Gamescom ticket to attend the event, There will be a specific gate for you to gather at and be let in for our event which is after the convention has closed for the night.

How far is the airport from Cologne? Is it easy to get a train, or should I just hire a car? How about travelling in Cologne itself?

There's a tram from the airport to central Köln that takes just under 30 minutes.

No idea about the rest, but Google Maps can probably tell you.

Thanks greenBene but I was looking for something a bit closer to the Messe.

Then you better be prepared to pay out the nose. Virtually anything central is either sold out or expensive.
45 minutes by public transit really isn't all that far anyway.
Cheapest I found when looking at hotels was €40/night, and that was over an hour from the hall.

I hope you all have a good time. I won't be attending, unfortunately. Even though the Chirper plush was definitely tempting.

But I was unable to obtain a Ulm t-shirt in time, and I did not want to disappoint people.

Aw, but now I would recognise you, even with a regular t-shirt! Too bad, but maybe next year?

Hey I've got a little question: Do the people who go to the gathering and to the gamescom have to leave the convention and come back in through the gathering gate or can they stay in the building?

Lastyear people did stay in the grounds, there is an outside area by the door to that will be used to enter the fan gathering area, they congregated there.

So there is a gate to enter the grounds, it leads to an outdoor area, then there is a door that goes inside to the fan gathering.
If you do not have a gamescom ticket, you wait at the gate, if you are already in gamescom you can wait in the outdoor area.

As we get closer to the date we will provide greater details.

Small update to the people that are going!
As we draw closer to the event more information will be provided (bet you never heard that before ) but rest assured that if you have purchased a ticket you are going to have access to the Fan Gathering! Due to vacation times there has been a lack of information and we apologize for that but once we have more details to share we will do so.

In short: If you bought a ticket from our online store and it went through you are going to be welcome to the party !

No one has "tickets" We may just have a guest list at the door VIP style. The person co-ordinating this aspect is on Holiday.
No worries though confirmation = you get in.

That remains to be seen after the gathering .

I remember standing outside the hotelbar with @myzael and @gigau because it was too loud inside

It was more than a few and went pretty late, or early depending on how you look at it.
