Pretty simple question, really. IMO there is no point in making the player choose between the new and the old; the 2 sets clearly don't look like a different species, so they could just be merged into 1 set.
I mean if there's "no point" in doing something, but it wasn't done, that would imply to me at least that there's some underlying technical issue that prevents such an obvious solution from happening.
