On topic, maybe the reason they're not using the imperial tricolore is exactly because it legally was a flag of Nazi Germany, and thus it might not be legal to use in the countries that have prohibitions against Nazi symbolism.
It's not illegal in Germany, and it was used as the flag of Germany in all previous games in the series.

In my opinion they decided this way because the rule of cool.
The tricolor flag HOI3 used is maybe historically closer, but it's still a not the correct one and it's very bland imo.
I think the current red/black looks much better, it looks closer to the historical flag, and it's still legal to show everywhere.
There is no way to show the historically accurate flag, so then why not use a cool looking one which is still somewhat relevant because it's a variation of the wehrmacht and the kriegsmarine warflag.

It's not illegal in Germany, and it was used as the flag of Germany in all previous games in the series.

If it was only Germany that was the issue, they could “fix it” (if needed) with their German version mod, but there's a bunch of countries that have similar (but different) laws, so they might have decided to go for the made-up flag to avoid that whole legal quagmire.

just alittle side note, and apologice to make this little remark, but it needs to be said...

its a grave insult to allow the Swastica to not be used, its a anchient symbol that been used for many thousends of year... that preceedes most nations in europe... its a real shame its even taken up in the conetext of the pitty 10years it was missused...

The swastika (also known as the gammadion cross, cross cramponnée, or wanzi) (as a character: 卐 or 卍) is an ancient religious symbol that generally takes the form of an equilateral cross, with its four legs bent at 90 degrees. It is considered to be a sacred and auspicious symbol in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism and dates back to before 2nd century B.C.

It has been used as a decorative element in various cultures since at least the NEOLITHIC. It is known most widely as an important symbol long used in Indian religions, denoting "auspiciousness.

It continues to be commonly used as a religious symbol in Hinduism and Buddhism.

Western literature's older term for the symbol, gammadion cross, derives mainly from its appearance, which is identical to four Greek gamma letters affixed to each other. The name swastika comes from the Sanskrit word svastika (Devanāgarī: स्वस्तिक), meaning "lucky or auspicious object".

Shame on you !

I know this is probably a joke comment, but the swastika is allowed and shown under the appropriate circumstances (i.e not the nazi version). See the Indian CK2 coats of arms for example.

I wonder why they didn't use this flag, which was actually historically used alongside the Nazi Party flag, if I'm not mistaken. Perhaps they wanted something a little more militaristic and akin to the Nazi one.

Yea, it's a hybrid kreigsmarine flag. But the only logical "Nazi" national flag to display without shoving a swastika in your face. The flag you suggest is the Weimar Republic which is not Nazi Germany so it wouldn't make sense

If it helps anyone, assuming that the method hasn't changed since HOI3, manually modding in flags is very simple. All you need to do is go to the gfx/flags folder and then open the respective TGA file with a program such as photoshop. Then get the flag that you wish to replace it with, make it the same size as the TGA file, then simply paste it over and you are done. It also will not affect the checksum in any way, so overall, modding in flags should not be an issue.

I actually like the one they use very much. Placing the Iron Cross in the middle of the flag, is actually a really innovative and good idea to add a semi-historical feel to the flag, without using the Swastika itself. IMO, great choice by paradox.

The problem is that the Imperial flag does not distinguish Nazi Germany from the German Empire. The flag they are using now is basically the Kriegsmarine Flag but replacing the illegal swastika with an iron cross, so I'd hardly say it's a made up or fantasy flag. Another flag that could work is this:
http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/images/d/de^vrd2.gif
It was used a lot on German vehicles and aircraft during WWII, and it resembles the Nazi flag without using the banned imagery.

As I understand it in HOI IV there is a (probably slim) possibility that Emperor Wilhelm II can (attempt to) retake the German throne. Perhaps the Imperial flag has been earmarked for the national German flag should such a thing happen. If this is the case, it's absence from Nazi Germany makes sense.

don't mind me guys, continue your discussions, just gotta deal with what i think is some misinformation being spread here

Would a mod that replaces the game's German flag with the historically accurate Nazi Party flag be allowed on Steam Workshop? Or would I have to download it from another website such as Mod DB or mod it in myself?

Probably not allowed by Steam, but we'll find out for sure when the game releases.

If you can't post it in the forums, you can't post it on the workshop.

Alright. Fair enough. Thank you.

Is what the others said about the Nazi Party flag in Steam Workshop true? If it is the case, would the best option for me just to mod in the historical flag myself?

heya, gamengervi, if you're still reading this topic, yes, a mod that replaces the game's german flag with a historically accurate NSDAP/WW2 german war flag can and will be allowed on steam's workshop. i don't see why someone would think if it's not allowed here it's not allowed on steam, since they have entirely different policies on what's allowed and what's not (which i have no problem with!), but i've seen a fair share of swastika/NSDAP symbol mods on steam workshop for various games, even civ v has a certain workshop item that adds in a certain führer into the game, and it's been around for some time, even stellaris has an NSDAP symbol mod!

so, yes, guys, chances are a historically accurate flag mod will even be maybe one of the first mods to come out on the steam workshop. if you're looking for some flag accuracy, i wouldn't worry. also, sorry if i did interrupt any discussion, and i don't support/encourage any type of NSDAP/national socialist symbolism outside of games like these.

also i'm not a fan of, nor am i one of those guys that go 'wait for the mods to come out!', but honestly a flag pack for this game will probably only be like some MB at most, i'm sure it'll be fine
