The Papal State 1492-1513 by Elgir

I have newer tried to make an AAR before, but now I am going to try.
This game was played in GC with a normal/normal setting, with both historic and random events on.
I did however change a few things in the GC file, none of it should however the change the balance to much.
The fist change was that I edited my Historic leaders list, this was so that the Papal State would have at least one leader all the time.
Now most of them was really not that strong, but the reason behind doing this is that the random leaders of the Papal state are something like the worst in Europe..
My starting army was increased a little and I edited my starting money to 300, this was to symbolise the fact that the catholic church was actually fairly rich.
Finally I started the game with using the Vatican cheat, giving me 6 diplomats from the beginning (again to Symbolise a historic strength of exactly that state).
Other than this I did not cheat.

Pope Alexander VI 1492-1503

The first of January 1492, pope Innocentius VIII has died leaving his holy title to Alexander VI.
What a burden to carry such a name, however I am sure he will be a true Alexander.
I am myself only a humble servant of Christ, but I am also a servant with skills.
This has brought me to the position as the right hand of the new pope, I am the grey eminence the man who rules from the shadows, I am the man who will shape the future of the papal state.

The new pope is an ambitious man, and he has already outlined the future goals for our glorious state.
It is nothing less than the recreation of the Roman Empire, and the reconquest of the holy lands.
Normally it would seam as an impossible task, after all we only have three rather poor provinces.
But I am confident that god is on our side, and that he will lead us to triumph.

However we can not start such grandiose plans without good preparations, and that is what I goes out to do.
The first thing we will have to do, is to take care of the poor finances.
Right now we are anything but rich, we are loosing money each month and our infrastructure is weak.
The easiest solution to the economic problems might be conquest, but that is something we are not yet ready for.
Instead I will invest in promoting chancellors in all of my three provinces, those securing future growth and tax income.
As a final note I will invest the rest of the money in trade.

About the plans for conquest, I have put my greedy eyes on the cities in northern Italy.
Therefore I have also sworn to take Parma (my first mission), the new pope is of course pleased with my plans of getting him new land.
The reason behind my interest in the northern towns, is that they have lots of gold and mediocre armies.
Unfortunately they are also allied with each other (Genoa, Tuscany, and Parma).
The good news is that the papal state is a member of the worlds most powerful alliance, consisting of ourselves, France and Savoy.
As a final note about the diplomatic situation it should also be said that I offered royal marriages to Spain, Austria, Savoy and France.
They all agreed, so it seams like I am secured against backstabbing.

Militarily, I am fairly strong compared to my northern neighbours (Tuscany, Parma, and Milan).
I have two armies, The Papal Guard lead by Bergama with 8.000 cavalry and the Army of the Holy Cross lead by D’Este with 12.000 infantry.
In terms of navy then I have the Papal fleet with 15 warships, unfortunately they are without any good leaders.

April 1492: This is a day of celebration for all Christians, Granada has been annexed by Spain.
Unfortunately it also makes Spain a much stronger power, I fear what the future will bring to Europe.
My only comfort in this matter, is that I have powerful allies to assist me against the Spaniards.

May 1492: The Marmaluks and the Turks has started a war against each other.
This is good, let the heathens kill each other.

Sep – Dec 1492: My alliance is in war against poor Lorraine.
It is France, Navarra, Savoy, Poland, and of course the Papal State against lonely Lorraine.
The result of the war was no surprise, France annexed our enemy.

Jan 1493: We now have the capability to equip my armies with field artillery(New land tech).
Plans is immediately prepared, Tuscany and Parma will both be easy targets when my army has cannons.
I order the building of 10 cannons in Rome.
Finally we have also finished our administrative reforms, what have improved our economy a little.

Marts 1493: Russia declare war against Kazan, I must admit that it has the smallest of interest for both myself and the pope.

Sep 10 1493: Another war has started, however this time it is much more interesting.
Hungary (Venice, The Hansa) has declared war against Turkey.
This war might influence the future of all of Europe, I fear that the Turks will get to strong.

Nov 1493: Holy mother of god, Poland my allie has declared war with Turkey.
Am unfortunately forced to follow the rest of the alliance into the war.
This will halt any plans that I might have in northern Italy, and I fear the risk of a seaborn invasion.
Unfortunately the war is a reality, so I might as well try to get something positive out of it.
A loan has been raised and the Papal guard will be strengthened by 6000 infantry and 10 cannons.
My plan will be to attack Turkey in Greece, and hopefully to take a province or two.
The army of the cross will stay in Italy, securing me from my neighbours.

May 1494: The Papal guard departs from Italy, it will try to invade Albania.

June 1494: Kazan is annexed by the barbaric Russians.

Aug 1494: The Papal Guard successfully engages a Turkish force of 2000 men in Albania.
After this the province was been put under siege.

Okt 1494: Bergama took Albania and immediately ordered his troops back on the road.
This time he was marching towards the much more important province of Hellas.

Nov 1494: What a month, the papal guard reaches Hellas as expected but then Bergama surprise me.
He proves himself to be a regularly military genius and takes the province in only one day (Might have been a bug)
Turkey is of course scared after this and send a diplomat to pope Alexander offering Albania in a peace treaty.
The pope was furious after this, seeing it as an personal insult.
And those he decided not to reply, instead he would let our army talk.
Bergama was given free hands against the Turks, his mission was now to retake as much Christian land as possible.

Dec 1494 – Jan 1495; There is no doubt that the Turks want us to suffer, it might be because of our insult against their diplomat.
Bergama proves himself an able general, beating two medium sized armies in Hellas and one in Albania.
However I am sure that the Turks has more armies to send, so I fear for the future of my campaign.

Jan – June 1495: I tryed to lay siege to Morea, but had to abandon that plan because of a new Turkish treat in Hellas.
An army of approximately 31.000 men was marching towards Hellas and meet the Papal Guard.
Unfortunately this proved to much for Bergama, and my army made a strategic retreat to Albania.
In may I engage the enemy again, however this time their forces was a bit smaller(some was sent north) and I was successful.
Bergama tries to take Morea one more time, but fails again because he is forced to defend of Hellas.
This continue until I finally get help from Venice lead by C.Bogia, who by the way is the nephew of the pope.
One thing that should be mentioned is that the Turkish sultan Ibrahim, was killed in one of the many battles.

July 1495: Hungary makes peace with Turkey, Hungary received the province of Serbia.
Unfortunately this also meant that Venice was also out of the war.
Militarily the Hungarian/Turkish peace agreement was nothing less than a potential disaster, but Alexander VI refused to back down.

Aug 1495 – July 1496: My fears was proved wrong, Turkey was getting weak.
Bergama took control of Morea, the Cyclades and Macedonia.
The two last provinces both fell in one day (hmm the same as before, I wonder what happened).
After this I order Bergama to take Constantinople, he replied that he would take all of turkey.

Aug – Oct 1496: Constantinople was back on Christian hands, however the Turks still refused our peace proposal.
So he ordered his army to continued to Smyna, where he was almost defeated by a Turkish force.
This made me realise that it was time to stop the war, so I offer them a peace treaty.
I want Morea, Hellas and 250 in gold, Turkey accepted the deal and the war was over.
All in all it ended up being a much greater success than I could ever imagine.

Oct 1496 – Jan 1498: The period after the successful Turkish campaign was one of rebuilding.
A series of Administrative reforms was started, most notable with an appointment of a chancellor in Hellas.
The army was also rebuild, D’Este was sent to Hellas, while Bergama and the Papal Guard returned to Italy.
New troops was raised, and I received a new general, it was the former venetian C.Bogia.
Other than this the period was rather uneventful, and the only thing I really did was to put our occasional rebellions.
The Turkish wars was finally ended on November 15 1497 when Poland received Rumelia and 250 in gold.

Feb 1498 – Jan 1499: In February 1498 the decision is made, I want to commence on my northern campaign.
Bergama takes command of the Papal guard in Romagna, while C.Bogia stays in Rome.
My tactic is to let the Tuscany attack Romagna while C.Bogia moves in and take Florence.
War is declared and the alliances are called on.
I get the help from France, Savoy and Poland, while Tuscany is backed by Parma and the knights of Sgt. John.
The war end up going as planed, Bergama takes care of the invaders in both Romagna(Tuscany) and Emilia(Parma).
At the same time C.Bogia move in and take first Florance and then on Oktober 1498 Luca.
Tuscany is annexed and my armies are ordered to siege Modena, this siege will mostly be known for the major suply problems cursed by the not so helpful French hands.
In the begining of the year 1499 of our lord, Parma is annexed and the war is over.
The only enemy that I did not annex was the Knights (Knights of Sgt. John), my naval power was simply to weak to tuch them.
Instead I paid them 47 gold, something that already happened before the annexation of Parma..

Jan 1499 – Jan 1501: I continue to strengthen my army and put down different peasant revolts, the Pope is happy with my success and makes me Baron of Tuscany.
In the end of this period I am however forced to take a though decision, the loans cost to much and the only option seams to be a deliberate bankruptcy.
I loan as much as possible and immediately invest it in sheriffs and a new brewery in Luca, my plan is to go bankrupt in February 1501.
In the rest of the world this period is marked by three events.
The first event was the peace between Turkey and the Marmaluks, giving Aleppo, the second event was the first of a series of wars between Russia(Denmark, Pskov) and the golden Horde.
Finally Spain (Nepal, Milan, the Palatinate) went to war with Portugal (Persia).

Jan 1501 – May 1502: Sometimes it can be dangerous to have allies, France declare war against England joust as I am about to go Bankrupt.
England stands alone, but it is still bad timing for me.
The bankruptcy is declared in Marts 1501, and I am finally free of all loans.
However revolts break lose and I am forced use my armies to regain control.
The good news in this period, was only that his holiness Alexander VI had the common sense to make Liguria a minister(random event).
Liguria is an able administrator who will be very helpful to our course.
Diplomatically this was a time of trying to regain popularity, a part of our effort was some friendly letters to Venice.
This should latter be proven useless.
In the rest of Europe we only have two events, Russia made peace with the golden horde(received Kujbyschew and 94 in gold), and Spain with Portugal (Spain got Algarve and the Azores).

May 1502 – Jan 1503: I was still suffering from the bankruptcy when the news came in, Venice (Hansa, Hungary, the Marmaluks) has declared war.
We knew that we had to move quickly, ordering all of our troops to Mantua in the hope of getting a quick victory
At that time I did not have any resources to fight a long war of attrition, so it was all or nothing.
Fortunately I was backed by all of my allies(France, Savoy and Poland), , so I had a good chance.
The first period of the war was fought in Emilia, here the Papal Guard engaged a Venetian force.
Bergama was victorious, and after that the war was now fought on Ventian territory and in Greece.
At January the first 1503, Venice had been put under siege and the Papal state was winning the war.

Pope Julius II (The unholy) and Pius III (The good) 1503 - 1513

January 1 1503: Disaster has struck the papacy our great papa is dead, and we have been left with Political turmoil.
A young commander named Julius II took control of Rome and got himself elected at pope, this only lasted a day as the Cardinals elected their own candidate.
This candidate was however found death, only teen minutes after his inauguration.
The risk of civil war was eminent, so I had to try to take control of the situation.
At the end of the day I had successfully negotiated a compromise, both of the candidates would back down.
A third candidate Pius III was elected as our new Pope and Julius II backed down from his claim in exchange for being made vice king and protector of Greece.
All of this means that the reign of Alexander VI had ended, he would be known as the great.
Both militarily and economically he did well, conquering waste territories and making us into a middle sized trade nation, with the most efficient administrative infrastructure in the world.
However he will not be remembered as a diplomat, in fact our diplomatic relations have newer been this bad before.

Jan – May 1503: The war continue, Venice tries to attack us in Greece (now under the command of Julius II), while we besiege the walls of her great city.
Revolts also spread across the papal state, forcing me to use some of my troops to regain control.
A separate peace with England was bought for 93 gold, and in May 25 C.Bogia took Venice.
It seamed like he was able to use his extensive knowledge of the venetian defences (he was once, the leader of their army).
The peace agreement was signed, giving Poland a province and 250 to be shared among the allies.
Normaly I would have taken a province for myself, but I had to think about my diplomatic relations.
This gave me a very good friend in Poland, and also meant that I would not get more enemies.

May 1503 – Nov 1508: This was a time of peace and rebuilding of my strength.
Armies was raised, rebels subdued and administrative reforms was started.
Among the more positive events in this period was the finding of a mine worth 400 gold in 1503, and the deflation of 1507.
Unfortunately this period was neither without negative events, among them was the protests among some members of the priesthood, aimed against the pope.
The bastards wanted him to give away all of his worldly possessions, including the Papal State.
Naturally they were all burned on the stake as heretics, but it coursed us some problems (-1 stability).
Militarily we did strengthen the size of our army, but this should be seen at together with the lose of two of our greatest generals.
Both D’Este and C.Bogia (the hero of the Venetian war) died in this period.
Internationally we saw Spain grow to the most powerful nation in the world, annexing Nepal and making alliances with Milan, Genoa, the knights of Sgt. John and the Palatinate.
This worry me a lot, as it means that they can strike against me on two fronts.
France made peace with England in exchange for Calais and Kurland dropped its vassalisation agreement with the Teutonic Order.

Nov 1508 – Dec 1509: This period would be known as the second campaign against Turkey.
It started with a polish (France, Navarra, Papal State and Savoy) declaration of war against the Sultan (Cyrenice, Algire), then naturally dragging me with them.
The Julius II the former pope and vice king of Greece, took control of my army.
He started by taking the Cyclades, beating a number of smaller Turkish forces.
Then he laid siege to and conquered Macedonia.
The Turks been beaten once more, and was forced to offer me the Cyclades in a peace treaty.
we agreed, this would strategically be a great improvement to our possessions in Greece.
At the end of the war I heard new about a second war between the Russian infidels (Denmark, Pskov) and the golden horde

Dec 1509 – June 1512: Another period of peace and rebuilding.
The Poles makes peace with Tyrkey (Poland taking Bulgaria and 250) and Russia with the Golden Horde (Russia gets 237 in gold).
My army is strengthened and so is my administration.
In the middle of this period I had an army strength of 0/8384/0 in Luca under the command of Bergama (Papal guard), 11679/0/8 in Rome, 5850/0/0 in Morea, 5970 in the Cyclades, and 6064/7408/7 in Hellas under Julius II (army of the holy cross).

June 1512 – Dec 1512: I hate my allies, France (Papal State, Navarra, Savoy and Poland) declare war against Spain (apparently standing alone).
This war is annoying as hell, Nepal and Apulia is in revolt so taking them would actually help the Spanish regain control.
So I start out trying to wait it out, ordering my two Italian armies to Rome.
The war was shortly after followed by another disaster, half of my Merchants had left me because they were unsatisfied.
Who cares about whether or not a venetian merchant has the privilege of being the supplier of horses to the papal guard.
The tide of war was in this period with the Spaniards, and Navarra was annexed.
This period also saw the beginning of a new major war, a war that would properly determine who would gain control of the eastern Mediterranean.
Venice (Hungary, The Marmaluks, Irak and the Hansa) declared war against the Turks (Wallachia, Cyrenica and Algiere).

January 1 1513: His holiness Pius III has died, and will be known as Pius the good, this is not only due to his excellent reforms but also because of his pacifistic nature.
Pius newer wanted the two wars doing his reign, however he was forced to defend what was rightfully ours.
The new pope Leo X, will inherit a middle sized nation with many problems.
Most notable the war against Spain, but also deteriorating diplomatic relations with most of Christian Europe.

You're playing 1.07, right? I woulnd't dare to go into bankrupcy in 1.08. A bit agressive for the pope who should be a man of peace and love and all that??? You control the Italy though, and that's the only thing that matters :)

*grins* Actuarially it is 1.08 so you can properly guess why the venetian war made me jump out of my seat.
I newer really tried to play with 1.07, so I have no idea how bad it was back then.
This time I was saved by my allies (mostly Poland), and of course the fact that Venice is not much of a land power.

About being to aggressive, you must remember that both the Turkish and the Venetian wars was defensive.
I might even have been able to annex all of turkey, but decided not to (hmm got to love badboy).

Nice job you're doing there. Even though the pope is inadequately represented in this game, it is good to see how you held on. Maybe the pope will be able to unify all of Italy for once (since Justinian). A couple of suggestions to EU programmers for EU II would be increased revenue (Church owned up to 40% of the land in some countries, not to mention indulgence sales), power to preach crusades (probably less effect everytime you did so), and 10 year cassus bellum from all catholic countries if they choose to attack the Pope. It was interesting, especially how the Knights Hospitaller were fighting you, since they are a crusading order.

About C. Borgia...Isn't it the same C. Borgia that stars in96-97 in the armies of Navarra? The guy that has 3 siege value. If he was the one who led your forces...hm, well, hm. The fortresses, especially minimal do fall in one day or two... I think he is supposed to be the son of the Alexander what'shisnumber (IV?). But you say he comes from Venice? Anyway, I read a book about Italian states, but it forgot to mention that Ceasar Borgia served in so many armies.

The Story Continue

Leo X 1513 – 1522 (The diplomat)

Jan 1513 – Dec 1513: The death of Pius III was soon followed by yet another shock, the vice king and protector of Greece Julius II died on January the 18.
Both of these deaths has shocked our government, but we have to get on and continue the war against Spain.
However nothing really happens until February, when a polish force attacks the Spanish rebels in Nepal.
I immediately order my forces to assist them, as this is a chance to break the stalemate.
Unfortunately the Poles was annihilated, so it ended up being my army against the rebels.
Many men was lost but in the end Bergama was successful, and began to siege the walls of the provincial capital.
I now fought that the stalemate was finally broken, but boy was I wrong.
Joust as I was about to take Nepal, I became shocked by new events.
A Rebellion had been started in Italy, and my army was forced to put any plans of taking Apulia from Spain on hold.

Dec 1513 – Oct 1514 : Around December 1513, I had finally beaten the Italian rebellions.
On top of this I has also raised some new troops, thus enabling our armys to continue the war in the south.
My troops was ordered to Apulia, where they engaged another force of Spanish rebels.
Unfortunately it proved to be a disaster, and Bergama was forced to retreat.
Another try to take Apulia, would not be attempted until March 1514.
In the end of the way I was finally able to take Apulia and invade the island of Sicily.
Spain changed tachtic, and in turn stroke against my Greek provinces, the fighting was though but my armies stood their ground.
In October a peace was made between France and Spain, the war was finally over.
Unfortunately this meant that I received noting, and France only got 98.
Annoying as I had at least thought I would have got Nepal.

Oct 1514 – Dec 1520: This was another long period of peace, the agenda was rebuilding and reforms.
Diplomatically I tried to secure my position, offering gifts and Royal marriages to my neighbours and allies.
Some of these efforts was unfortunately in vain, both Spain and Venice refused my proposals.
Militarily I was strengthened considerably, both in terms of manpower and generals.
I received a general named Maximus, who was send to take control of my Greece armies.
In the rest of the world, this period rather full of interesting events.
The largest of these, was that a heretic named Luther has started his preaching.
In the future, this event will be known as the reformation, of course I immediately decrease my tolerance to the new faith.
Another event during this time was a Turkish/Hungarian peace agreement, where Turkey received 250.
This event was interesting because it proved that my Turkish neighbours still had some strength left.

Adrianus VI 1522-1523 (The rebuilder)

Jan 1522 – Jan 1523: The reign of Leo X was ended after a long period of peace.
He would be known as a successful diplomat, who improved our relations to much of Europe.
The only war that he fought was the one he inherited from the former Pope, and in it he was finally able to take the initiative against Spain.
The new pope Adrianus VI, is a pacifist (very bad military skills) who only ruled for 1 year.
Ironically the only notable event doing his reign, was the rebuilding of our army.
So if he will ever be remembered under a name, then it will be as the rebuilder.
Or maybe it should be the assassinated one, because the truth of the matter is that I killed him.
He was annoying as hell, always trying to stop everything that I did.
In fact the army rebuilding programme was my idea, and he was against it from the start.
Finally I ended up getting hold on some plans of giving the Papal state to Spain, this was to much for me.
His assignation was however a disaster, Würtemberg was the first nation to go protestant.
I have reason to believe that the assassination of the pope has something to do with this.

Clemens VII 1523 – 1534 (The warrior)

January 1 1523: Clemens VII, was elected as the new pope.
He is a pope after my taste, a strong leader and a skilful administrator.
I have great faith in him, there is no doubt in my mind that he will do well.
To prove my point, he immediately order the finishing of the strengthening of my army.
Our goal is to prepare for war, it is time to regain the momentum and go on the offensive.
After this last reforms we will have standing army consisting of.
0/10.056/0 (Papal guard under Bergama) in Luca, 19.393/0/13 in Florance, 13.584/7.340/7 (army of the cross under Maximus) in Hellas, 5.970/0/0 on the cyclades and 5.410/0/0 in morea.

Jan 1 1523 – Feb 1525: One of the few peaceful periods during the reign of Clemens VII.
Administrative reforms are being started, resulting in having sheriffs in all of our provinces.
New farming methods gives us higher production (random event), and Turkey (Algiere) end the war against Irak.
My alliance is renewed (this time with me as leader), and Hannover saddens us by being the second nation to embrace the protestant faith.
This period end when I start to prepare the army for a battle against Venice.

Feb 1525 – Oct 1525: War against Venice was declared, my allies (France, Savoy, Poland, are faithful but so is those of Venice (Hungary, the Marmaluks, the Hansa, Irak) .
The Papal State had a very good start of the war, I immediately ordered my Italian armies to Mantua.
At that time it seamed like I had all the initiative, and Mantua fell without ever getting relived by an enemy army.
After the successful siege, I ordered my troops back on the road with the gola of taking Venice itself.
However our enemy was prepared and was waiting with about 19.000 men, on top of this they also send a Marmaluk expeditionary force to Hellas.
Both of my armies was victorious, Venice was under siege and my confidence was increased.
I felt like nothing could stop our army, Bergama and Maximus (in Hellas) would surely lead us to glory.
Around September I engage a small Venetian force, however I am backed by an army from Savoy.
The Venetian was outnumbered 100 to 1 and it was an easy victory.
Unfortunately I also noticed that the Hansa was invading Poland, something that would prove decisive only one month later.
In October I was shocked by the news from the eastern front, Poland had made a white peace with Venice.
This was something that could not be underestimated, I was now without doubt that Hungary would come to the aid of Venice.
On top of this I also saw another Marmaluk force invade Hellas, so I was beginning to shiver.
All of this lead to me agreeing to a peace with Venice.
It was signed on the 22nd of October 1525, I was made the official winner and received Mantua

Nov 1525 – Marc 1527: A time of reforms and few international events, but also a time of relative peace (a few small peasant revolts) throughout the Papal State.
The international events in this period consisted of the Hansa going protestant, Another war between Russia and the golden horde, and finally the signing of the Tordsilles agreement.
In fact this agreement was made by the pope, it was our hope that it would improve our relations to Spain.
It newer worked, instead it would joust help making Spain even more dangerous.
In the end of this period I was made prince of Italy by the pope, this was a strong evidence of my growing power and my good relations with the pope.

April 1527: This month would be known as the month of death, when Europe was thrown into war.
Four major wars was started, and the first one was Spain against Venice (the marmaluks, Irak), shortly followed by Austria(Milan, Würtemberg and Bayern) taking advantage of this and declaring war against Hungary (Venice, Marmaluks, Irak).
The final war was started when Turkey (Algiere, Cyrenice, Wallachia, Krim) declared war against Papal State (Poland, France, Savoy).
It looked like something I had seen before, and I started to wonder if the Sultan was a Masochist.
May 1527 – April 1528: The first year of my Turkish campaign was rather uneventful.
Maximus started to siege Macedonia, while another army tried to take Albania.
Macedonia was taken after some months of fighting, but in Albania I ended up losing to attrition.
The Papal guard in Italy was ordered to sail to Albania, they would restart the siege on the province.
Then I would also be able to lead Maximus continue his campaign.
Of course all of this lead to some naval battles, all of them against small Turkish forces.
However my fleet proved itself (that was a first), and Bergama was slowly reaching the coast of Albania.
The army of the Holy cross in Macedonia, was in this period engaged in a number of small skirmishes against the Turks.

May 1528 – July 1529: Bergama reached Albania, and make an oath to take that province.
Maximus was ordered to stay in Macedonia, where the Turks continued to send new armies.
At that time I was worried a lot, because the size of the enemies armies was increasing.
However this was all changed on November 1528, when a Polish force invaded Thrace.
This enabled Maximus to continue his invasion, and he was immediately ordered to help with the conquest of Constantinople (Thrace).
Albania also fell in December, and Bergama was ordered to follow Maximus.
His goal would however be the provinces of Asia Minor, starting with Smyrna
In the same month I also took Constantinople, so Maximus was now on his way to Anatolia.
Unfortunately the Turks kept attacking Thrace, and that way they was able to stop Maximus (I hate that AI tactic).
For a long time it seamed like I would newer get a break, but finally I was able to reach Anatolia in February.
Both Anatolia and Smyrna was taken, and Turkey was offered a peace.
I demanded Albania, Macedonia and 250 in gold, the Turkish sultan was forced to agree or risk a future annexation.

July 1529 – Dec 1533: This would become four years of peace and reforms.
I found a mine worth 400 gold in Albania, and used the money to build a brewery in Modena.
Sheriffs was appointed in the new Greek provinces and the army was strengthened.
Other than this I also had to subdue one Greek rebellion after another, so I was slowly growing tired of my newly conquered areas.
The god news was that Hellas and Morea had been fully integrated in my nation.
Internationally this marked the end of some of the European wars.
Poland finally made peace with the Turks, and got Dobrudja in return.
Hungary made peace with Bayern, in return of giving 27 to the Germans.
This is followed up by other peace agreements with Hungary and Switzerland(gets Pest), Würtenberg (gets 80 and Banat) and Austria (gives 219 to Hungary)
Turkey (Krim, Cyrenica, Algiere) signs a truth with The Teutonic order and Kurland.
Other than this it seamed like the protestant faith had been strengthened, Sweden and Hessen both decide to follow what we now see as the hated antichrist (Luther).

1 January 1534: Our glorious pope, Clemens VII had died.
He was a great man who inspired us all, his legacy will be that of a warrior.
Two wars was fought during his reign, both of the immensely successful.
Diplomatically we actually did better than expected(gifts can do wonders), however it doesn’t mean that we are popularly but joust that we are not nearly as hated(Only eception to this are our allies and Austria).
Unfortunately Clemens will also be known for one of the largest failures in papal history, and that is the Tortillas agreement.
It would newer lead to improved relations with Spain, in fact the future would prove the opposite.
In spite of this he was still a great pope, and can honestly say that it was an honour to have known him.
The new pope Paulus III have inherited the strongest Papal state in human history.
He control large parts of Italy and all of Greece, what is the largest area controlled by a Italian single Italian state since the Ostro Gothic empire.

Oh forgot to mention this, C.Bogia was in family with Alexander VI.
However I am in doubts about how close they was, but it was either son or Nephew.
He did lead the armies of many states, and at least he leads the Venetians during the beginning of the game.
And to answer Charles, I can only say that I agree.
But I guess it would be a low priority to make this for a state that is originally unplayable.

In an earlier AAR, the papacy invaded North Africa and took Tunisia, Cyrenaica and Tripolitania. They also offer a base to invade Egypt and the rest of the levant. Have you considered taking these weak states?

Yes those three state is defiantly on my wish list, but wont be possible in the near future.
The next parts of my AAR will show wars started by other powers, and a rather big stroke of luck.
All of these event will lead me in another direction, simply because I have to defend my land.
I have not yet played this specific game to 1600, so north Africa will be a future possibility.
However other concerns comes first, especially problems with aggressive neighbours.

Continued history of the Papal state, and some major wars

Paulus III 1534 – 1550 (The Austrian)

Jan 1534 – Feb 1534: The state of the army in 1534, was 0/7281/0 (papal guard) under the command of Bergama in Mantua, 16934/0/22 (army of Italy) in Florance, 9553/9744/13 (Army of the holy cross) under Maximus in Macedonia, 7085/1000/0 in Albania, and 3000/0/0 on the Cyclades.
All of this was not sufficient to our needs, so Paulus starts his reign with a major investment programme.
Then in February, something incredible happens.
The Austrian king and emperor of the holy roman empire has been found dead in his bed room.
Rumours has it that he died while making unholy things in the bedroom.
How he died was however not that interesting, however that was his testament.
Apparently he had something to redeem, and gave his country to the church.
This almost double our territory, and give us a gold mine.
Unfortunately we did not gain much to our military, as most of the Austrian army had been destroyed in the previous war against Hungary.
The result of this was that I only received the disappointing 8041 new infantrymen.
This event also created two problems, the first one was a higher risk of rebellion the other that Spain was made Holy Roman Emperor(dammed I hate those Spaniards).

Marts 1534 - June 1536: I quickly notice that Spain are using their new won title against Venice.
Marching though Germany, with the goal of going around the Venetian navy and striking against Venice itself.
I try to secure my position by offering marriages to both Venice and Spain.
None of them agreed, so I continued to have the same problems.
The army rebuilding programme is continued, and I try to build up my diplomatic relations to the world.
International we was horrified to see that both Brandenburg and England decided converting to the heathen religion (We hate Luther).
Finally a peace agreement has been reached between Spain and Venice, the Iberians gets 38.

July 1536 – Sep 1539: The programs to strengthen the army is continued, my goals are to become a mediums sized military power.
On top of this I also order the building of 8 Galleons to my navy, this is the beginning of my preparations against Venice.
Diplomatically we successfully arrange royal marriages with Milan, Böhmen, Venice and Bayern.
This shows how much improvement we have made during the last years, unfortunately we are still hated by many of the German states and neighbours.
Internationally Venice Annex Cyrenica, and Spain declares war against both the Aztecs and the Incas.
The religious division of Europe was also continued as both Preussen, Denmark and Kleve converts away from the one true faith.

Nov 1539 – Sep 1543: Extensive mobilisation was started, trying to prepare our army for coming battles.
We was especially investing heavily in cannons and cavalry.
Economically we also did well, especially the deflation of 1541 was helpful.
On top of this deflation, we was also helped by a 50 moth long ban of foreign goods.
A centre of culture is build in 1541, using the deflation to get it cheap.
Diplomatically we continued to build up relationships with our neighbours.
Offering Royal marriages to France, Savoy, Poland, Genoa, Böhmen, Bayern Hungary, and Spain.
Unfortunately both Spain and Hungary refused.
My alliance is renewed and Böhmen also joins, when I take advantage of them being thrown out of their alliance when they went protestant (Hey I am being practice).
My ties to Savoy is also improved, they are now my vassal.
I also get another advantage from our alliance, when I exchanged my maps with France(could offer them knowledge taken during the wars against Venice and Turkey).
All of this means that the Papal state is getting stronger, I should now be able to defend myself in case of war.
Internationally I lost a large number of soles to the protestant, as Böhmen, Sachsen, and the Teutonic order all decides to follow the falls prophet.
Spain is getting even stronger when they made peace with the Inkas, as Spain got 250 and the provinces of Cajamarca and Tucuman.
The only war that was started in this period was a rather odd one.
Venice(Irak, the marmaluks, and the knights of st. john) declared war against the Teutonic order (Sweden).
I have no idea what they wish to gain from this war, I wondered if one shot would ever be fired.

Nov 1543 – Aug 1546: This period should slowly grow into the largest war I had ever fought, a war that would shape the future and course me many headaches.
It started with my wishes of getting the control of Milan, the reason for this wish was their strategic location in the middle between myself and two of my allies.
At first I tried the peaceful solution, and offered them a membership of my alliance.
They refused and in December 1543 a war was declared, Milan was going to be my province.
The state of the Papal army at the declaration of war was 0/28281/0 (Papal guard) under Bergama in Mantua, 28934/4000/32 (Army of Italy) in Florance, 7085/1000/0 (Southern Legion) in Albania, 16503/12744/13 (army of the holy cross) under Maximus in Macedonia, 20940/0/0 (Northern Legion) in Tyrol, 24961/3000/30 (Imperial guard) in Austria.
I immediately ordered Bergama to Milan, counting on getting the infantry support from Savoy.
The Milanese army was easily destroyed and a siege was started, but then disaster stroke.
In February I received courier telling me that Spain (Hannover, Genua, Hessen and Köln) had declared war.
My allies proved helpful, as they all came to my rescue, however Spain had prepared for this war.
I make a though decision, and decide to leave Milan for Savoy, both of my Italian armies are ordered to meet in my province of Emilia.
During Marts I am attacked by two small Spanish forces in Emilia and Albania, I win in both of the cases.
However I also notice a large force of approximately 65000 Spaniards, marching towards Emilia.
The Spaniards engaged my Italian armies around April, the battle was however won.
Their lack of an able commander proved decisive, in Greece I suffered from yet another attack.
This time it was in Macedonia, and Maximus was easily victorious.
At this time I began to fell quite sure of myself, but suddenly both Mantua (Milan/Spain) and Rome (Spain) was under siege.
The next couple of month was used to kick out the invaders, however my Papal guard did what was necessary.
Genoa started to be active in the war, and attacked me in Macedonia, while Savoy ruined many of my war plans.
The reason was that Savoy offered peace to Milan in exchange for 250 in gold, forcing me to restart the siege on their province.
In august of 1544 I annexed my first enemy, Milan was out the war.
However the army had suffered badly from attrition.
In December I had finally turned the war, another Spanish force had been beaten in Emilia and Bergama had beaten the Spanish invaders in Rome.
Nepal would be put under siege even thou both Spain and Genoa invaded Greece once more.
Then in January I her news of lost battle in Albania.
Maximus did stop the enemy afterwards, but it proved that I was vulnerable.
Around Marc 1545 I take Naples, but there was not much cheering among our citizens.
Our greatest general Bergama, had been killed by a shot in his head.
A great lose to that Papal state and to our war effort, our navy was immediately ordered to take Maximus to Italy.
Unfortunately he did not arrive until September, this was mostly due to the Spanish navy.
One thing is for sure, naval power is not my strength.
Maximus was immediately thrown into the war, when he invaded Apulia.
There he successfully met a Spanish force of equally the size of his own, a battle that gave me the supremacy of Italy.
However in November I am shocked beyond comparison, Maximus died and left my army without a leader(as said before the random leaders of the Papal state are among the worst in the game).
I immediately tried to sue for peace but Spain refuses my terms (Nepal to myself and French Comte to France).
From then on the war changed its nature, it now became a war of attrition.
Genua emidiatly invaded Greece, but I won the comming battle.
Unfortunately this was only to be the beginning of my problems, a few months later I see that Spain had lunched a major invasion of Albania.
The southern legion was easily beaten, and my province was under siege.
There was no doubt that something had to be done, so I began to prepare my Austrian armies to go to Spain itself.
Finally I also decided to give Genoa 250 in exchange for peace, I hoped that it would turn the tide of war in my favour.
Other than the war I also notice that Kurland embrace the Protestant faith.

Aug 1546 – Jan 1550: Joust as I was preparing my plans I was hit by another disaster, Hungary(Venice, the Marmaluks and Genoa) declared war (OOC: I guess I was about to throw the computer out of the window).
Fortunately my allies stood by their word, and that would at least give me a chance.
In September I decide to make the humiliating decision and offer Spain a white peace, they accept and I could now concentrate my effort on the new enemy.
Hungary invaded my province of Presburg, so I order my imperial guard to come to the rescue.
My Greek armies was ordered to the Venetian province of Regusa, they had a shipyard I wanted.
In October the war continued, I won against the Hungarian in Presburg and my troops was ordered to the Hungarian Capital.
But right as you would think that I was winning, I you got a new problem when Venice began to siege Tyrol.
Instead of attacking the venetians in Tyrol I did something else, I ordered the Italian armies (now freed from the Spanish campaign) to Venice itself.
Unfortunately the Venetian in Tyrol decided to interfere, and my superior army was badly beaten.
I must say that I got enough of humiliating defeats, and started an army reform.
It was a simple move, all of my commanders was beheaded.
Then in June I was back in Venice, bombarding the walls of that province once again(while they had besieged Tyrol).
This time I was hopping it would work, my Italian armies had been strengthened with 6000 cavalry.
So I figured it should be possible.
In Hungary I had much greater success, as their province had fallen in my hands.
At that time I keep trying to lunch attacks on the walls of Venice and Ragusa, however it always proved disastrous.
Then I see that my war effort is hurt gain, Poland makes peace with Hungary(Polend gets Croatia and Ruthenia) and Venice (Poland gets 250 and Kosovo).
France makes peace with the Knights in exchange for 250 and with Hungary in exchange for 149
On top of this I also see that my dear vassal Savoy gets 220 from a peace with Hungary.
All of this means that my alliance is severely weakened.
However in October 1549 I finally get a break, Venice fell into my hands.
Now other than those things that I have already mentioned, there was a few other interesting events.
Mainly that Calvin started his preaching in 1548 and that Scotland became Protestant and the Palatinate reformed.
Also Poland made peace with Spain, in exchange for 162.
During these years we also suffered from a few rebellions, but they were all easily suppressed.

January the 1 1550: Paulus III had died, he would be remembered as the pope that inherited Austria.
The end of his reign was however not a happy one, instead of leaving a great power he only left insecurity.
All of his defensive wars had been a large strain on the Papal State.
The war against Venice was however turned around during 1549, and therefore he do leave some opportunities to the new pope Julius III.

About screen shots, then I do not have one from this period of Papal history.
So that must wait until the next addition to this AAR.

I'm still amazed that you did so well against the Turks earlier in the game. The way your dealing with Spain shows the ability to know when to cut your losses and make peace. I've run into problems when I've been a little too greedy and tried to hang on to my conquests when the smart thing was to get a white peace and survive to fight another day. Good luck ! One question. What is your inflation rate after the period of deflation ended. I'm trying to figure out how much inflation affects the game.

I honestly don't remember my inflation, but it is properly fairly high.
Of course I don't have any loans anymore, but the wars should have made a negative impact.
About Turkey and Spain.
Turkey is a much stronger power than I was in the start, the only reason I had the success was Poland.
Later on it was different, Turkey had become weaker and I was stronger.
But even then I could only do what I did because of my alliance.
Spain is as you can imagine the nation I hate the most, they seams to be both very aggressive and very powerful.
And somehow they always declare war when you don't want them to.
In fact I am amassed how strong they are compared to France, but I guess the Dutch rebellion will create some problems for them.

Nice AAR - Nice bit of 2 edged luck on the Austria inheritance thing.

Started a Papal game yesterday myself (IGC 1.8) and had similar plans to yours - at least for the unificatoin of Italy and eventual return of Venician territory to Rome - However, I jumped on Naples off the bat, took out max loans and went bankrupt - 3 times - Inflation of 77% after the 3rd bankrupcy - don't really understand that inflation and its' relation to bankruptcy - the rate steadily fell for the next few years after the 3rd bankruptcy. (try buying a cannon for 100D on 27D/yr income)

Good luck and watch the Spanish.

Interesting AAR! One of the better ones I might add. It's such as shame you don't inherit commanders when you annex a nation. I mean, VonF(rundsberg) is an excellent general for Austria, I looking at your current situation, you can use him, I believe.
