The Popes have been eating their Wheaties lately, or feeling their oats. Every Pope in both of my current Play Throughs, have excommunicated at least two or three Rulers. I looked at the excommunicate Rulers' traits, and didn't see anything excommunication-worthy.
The Pope even excommunicated me in my 769 Charly Play through. I do like to play Simon-Pure, and I can vouch that my Ruler had no negative Traits, no murders, no kinslaying, and no adultery either. so I'm at a loss as to why the the Pope did that.
Is this a bug? Or is this WAD? If this is WAD, then Excommunication needs to be toned down-limited to murderers, Kinslayers, and Adulterers. If that's not possible, then there need to be some penalties and/or maluses for wrongful excommunication.
Papal Excommunications are analogous to Rulers Revoking Vassals' Baronies/Counties/Duchies. A Ruler can't do that without cause. The Pope should face the same risk if he Excommunicates someone who isn't a murderer/Kinslayer/Adulterer.
Nobody else gets to do things like that for free. The Pope shouldn't either.
