I'm playing a game as Leon (700's start) and I'm having so confusion with the papacy. The only way I can get a pope elected is if every single cardinal seat is filled by someone from my kingdom. The cardinals literally will vote for ANY cardinal not from my realm, even if I have 8 cardinals–they vote for the 9th. Is this a bug? I know you can see "reasons" for why a cardinal is voting a certain way, but is there a place where you can see reasons why someone might vote for them? I just want to know if its that my candidates just arent good enough, or if its not meant to be happening this way. Cause theyre voting for a frenchman with 2 learning and a whole bunch of sin traits over my castillian with 24 learning and half of the virtues

Cardinals like congressmen usually resent being told what to do. They'll vote for who they think is the best candidate for the seat of St. Peter, granted you'd think it should be one of your own however check that one guy's age and prestige, especially his dynasty and if he is italian. Castillian is not the preferred culture and its hard to overcome that.

yeah, I realized that basically its impossible to overcome the "in rome" and "italian" bonuses. I'm just happy that its working as its meant to

Its worth noting that if you make your candidate of choice your chaplain and have him increase religious relations in Rome then he will get the 'in Rome' modifier.

Actually I've had one of my own vassals, who was norse, elected as pope after only having been Catholic for some 40-50 years and not putting all that much effort into it. The key was simply to give him a whole duchy, with 3-4 temples (all personally held by the Prince-Bishop). This gave him a big headstart from the "secular power" bonus and, with the steady piety gain of his holdings he was very soon favored by most cardinals. Having him become pope didn't actually do me any good, because he wasn't of my dynasty and after ascending to the papacy I lost all past opinion bonuses with him but somehow retained a lot of the bad dones ("revoked vassal titles", stuff like that) even though he was no longer my vassal.

The Borgias did pretty well not being Italian.

Out of era.
..and they did hang out in Rome.

Exceptions are stil possible ingame.
---

As Harassercat said, give them duke titles.(admiitedly that can be hard to do sometimes)
and church buildings in temples for piety.
Worked for me quite often when i played as HRE last year.
Haven't played catholics much this year.
I wonder if monks run off to Rome or monasteries sometimes. I think they should.
I also wonder if opinon bonuses are bugged with 'your own' popes, but i have no recent experience.
