I don't know if this is an issue with the beta or if its already been reported.

I have had 4-5 new popes since i started my new game (april 8 beta) and sometimes I get the message that I'm the new papal controller but the cross doesn't show up on my portrait and i don't get the abilities. I've saved and reloaded and sometimes I get it, and then sometimes after reload it says someone else is the papal controller.

I don't know if this is an issue or not.. just thought I'd check.

I regularly have to reload the game from a save if I was papal controler, the pope I controlled died and I was also papal controler for his sucessor (I think piety is the predominant factor now and not relationship to the new pope). So once I have my second puppet pope I neither have the cross showing, nor the papal options (excommunicate and revoke excommunication). If I reload immediately, the papal controller message appears again and I have correct control.

I assume the someone else becoming papal controller event might occur if you continue to play and only reload later when someone else might have a better ranking in whatever system is used to pick the papal controller (so assuming it's just piety, that would mean someone else has more piety).

All of that looks as if in these situations the game doesn't actually have a papal controller for that time and it only noices on reload and does a fresh selection.

I had this as well but didn´t need to reload. I´m not quite sure what I did, perhaps just enter a different character portrait or switch around the screens a while.

EDIT No, now I remember. I alt-tabbed out of the game to bitch about it in irc if Johan happens to be there, good thing he wasn´t as it went to normal as I returned to the game :D Note that no reloads were needed.

A couple of wierd papal controller things for me, too.

Crusade called to Tunis. I take it - and surrounding provinces. A year or two later, with my piety in the 3000+ zone I become Papal Controller. A couple of years later my king dies. His heir (on zero piety, remember) immediately becomes PC - tho' the cross doesn't show until a few months later. The heir must have gained the "crusader" trait (which maybe explains him becoming PC?) whilst I had him off, waiting for succession and running the Duchy of Badajoz. But as soon as becomes King of Castile, he's losing 5 piety a month because of crusades expectations - but we already control Tunis...

Later in the game, after the crusade ends and after bashing a few more muslims, he's on 1000+ piety. Pope dies and the new PC is the 9 year old King of Aragon - on 9 piety. WTF?
