Papacy = Emperor level title?

I decided to play as Matilda of Tuscany and leave the empire and swear fealty to the Pope. I was lucky to see that Bavaria and super large Saxony decided to leave at the same time, and we all won our wars of independence. Anyways, I joined the pope as his vassal, with the intention of forming the Kingdom of Italy under the pope, but I realized this would not be possible as the Pope himself is only a King-level title. Is there a mod here that allows for this change, or is there a file i can edit to make him an Emperor? Does anyone advise against not doing this?

change k_papal_state in landed_titles.txt to e_papal_state
also change that in /history/titles.
also change it in /gfx/flags

There is also tons of references to k_papal_state in event and decision files, so you need to replace those too.

I don't think there is bane. If i remember right it makes reference to rightful religious head, is catholic+controls religion. I do not remember seeing any direct reference to the title though.

Well, now that I checked, there is one reference to k_papal_state in trait_effects_events.txt

So I was partially correct, but mostly wrong.

The orthodox one has to be king as he is a vassal to the byzantyne emperor.

True. The Catholic Pope, on the other hand, was greater or at least equal to any "earthly" ruler, wasn't he? At least, according to what the church at the time asserted?

the Pope asserted that the Holy Roman Emperor held the Imperial title as a fief from the Pope (ie. the HRE is a vassal of the pope). Of course we already know how that ended up :laugh:
