Germany’s main push into Poland was in the center. The infantry broke the first line of defenders and then the Panzers blitzed forwards. Some turned northwards towards Lodz and some turned south towards Krakow. Erwin Rommel’s 1st Panzer infiltrated deep into the Polish center. “Schnellerheinz” Guderian of the 2nd army corps had special plans for Rommel. With the support of an elite engineer brigade he would use the gap to stab at Warzawa. The information about the city defense was a bit unclear but it was worth a chance.
According the initial plans, the Germans would attack all other cities than Warzawa but as the war unfolded there was a distinct chance that the war could be ended faster if the Polish army did not manage to fall back to the capital in time.

Initially, the Polish defense south of Lwow seemed strong for the force the Obercommando had deployed in Hungary, especially as the Hungarian divisions just initiated their mobilization-process and were at some 20% strength only. Nevertheless, von Mackensen’s 11th Panzer had been pushing through the Polish infantry and reached the gates of Lwow. He awaited support of the 15th Infantry division before the attack was commenced on the key city.
The Poles had the numbers on their side, and the benefit of good defensive positions – but they consisted of militias, old school cavalry and regular infantry who recently stumbled into the city after their first terrible meeting with von Mackensen’s panzerskampwagens. Cities are not a suitable place to fight in for Panzers but von Mackensen recklessly pushed through the first line of defenders in the western outskirts of the city. He knew that preciously few of the enemies had weaponry that could scratch his panzers and moreover, just like Rommel’s 1st panzers, he had the luxury of having elite engineers to his disposal to open up blocked roads or blow up enemy nests or anything else that hindered their fast offensive. In part of the front, the Poles were completely blitz through and were panicked when supply lines were cut and the Germans shot at them from all angles. Still, street battles are a slow and bloody business. The Battle of Lwow will not be over fast.

May 17th-18th, 1939
The battle of Warszawa raged on into its 6th day. It was far from a pleasant spring and the temperature dropped to some 4-5 degrees Celsius during nighttime and stayed around 10 during the day. For the soldiers struggling in the ruins this was just another source of misery.
As a motorized brigade had joined the battle from the eastern province of Praga, the city was now attacked from four sides and suffered for it. Still, the two infantry divisions were attacking across the river which hindered their efficiency.
Rommel’s panzers hade made a significant breakthrough, however, and part of the defenders had been isolated in pockets. They could not hope to last very long.
As the city fell, over a thousand German’s lay dead. Some commanders later criticized Hitler that the losses were unnecessary. Hitler would never agree. Although Poland would surrender even without the loss of Warszawa it was crucial for the coming occupation of the country that the people in the capital got to feel a taste of war, and that ruins were created as monuments over their loss.

Even before Warszawa had fallen, Poland surrendered. All the other key cities had fallen and the capital was surrendered and under attack. The Polish leadership hoped to minimize the impacts on their capital and the Polish people in a battle that was already lost.
With further ado, Germany annexed Poland. Poland is no more.
This whole battle had been fought in less than three weeks without any real counter-measure from United Kingdom or France, except a few strategic bombing runs, hitting a few German factories and leading to a couple of air battles. It was the sitzkrieg.
Authors note: Poland fell before Warszawa had fallen. Thus, my initial plan worked. Due to Zid being away and the Polish forces exped to UK, they remained and the Battle of Warszawa actually continued until the 19th. Sir Henry playing UK disbanded all Polish units not engaged in battle but a few HQs had to be attacked in order to disappear.
Germany’s flank was now secured. It was time for the next phase of the plan…
