I am playing the US for the first time. I was quite shocked to find out that ships cannot pass from the Caribbean to the US west coast because "it is too far and out of range" at least at the beginning of the game. I am pretty sure that is why they built the canal to begin with so shouldn't this be allowed?

That said, I haven't figured out how the game calculates max distance and range, but it sure looks like it isn't from nearest occupied port, otherwise this passage would work. Do I have to take Mexico to get around this??? Bug maybe?

Thoughts?

It´s not a bug, you try to sail through the canal with a fleet containing DDs or CLs. If you want to sail with ships from the east coast to the west coast, change the homeport first, than you can sail your ships to the destination.

Add 1 capital ship to those DD´s and they will pass after you rebase them.

I don´t know why but that bug happens when you try to rebase DD`s only. (And i think CL´s too).

With a capital ship its no problem.
To be safe use a BB.

No help. It is the range of the destroyers limiting it. If i just select destroyer II, the range increases, but still is not able to go to California. I believe all of the larger ships can make it. Magellan would laugh :)

very strange. Im always able to transfer my ships from the atlantic to the pacific if rebase them.

You're trying to send them to california? Or you're clicking a random port? (because that matters, they will not move to another region until they reach california port first).

DD 1 have low range so you can't patrol very far from bases at all.

And fleet range is the average of the ships, so a single Battleship will not be able to share much of it's "fuel" (range) if it's 50 lvl 1 DDs who drag it down!

But the others are right in that rebasing range should be unlimited ( as long as there are no canals or straits in the way your enemies control ).

This was an issue in the Sunflower Beta, but I thought all the obvious problems had been fixed. Perhaps you should report the bug.
I've had this as a problem Since 1.0.

Permanent Solutions that would not involve rebasing/repair gimmicks
Adjust the range of tech 1 DD and CL to just barely cover the range gap
Introduce fleet basing treaties and give a defacto one with Mexico
Naval base level influences supply range
New Unit type: Collier/Supply Ship that increase range of a fleet they are attached to. I would make it slightly more expensive than a normal convoy
