Alright. So I started a game last name as the King of Mercia, 769 start. Figuring on doing some crusading achievements. Came across a bizarre situation.
Selected business focus, to get that juicy trade mission gold and %income. Luckily for me, I thought, I managed to make friends with the target of the trade mission, Sigurd Ring. Soon as that happened, I figured I could get my chaplain in for possible conversion and possibly help him/future kings deal with converting Scandinavia. Since Norse raids are so damn annoying and AI vassals are babies when it comes to defending their lands. Back pocket plan would be, if the event came up, to convert to Norse* if it was pushed and just play like I normally do. So, in steps:
1. Plopped by court chaplain down in Uppsala. Bishop of Canterbury, in fact, with great learning.
2. Middle of my tribute forcing wars in southern England, I check on the court of Sigurd for any quick successes. Notice that I don't see my chaplain avatar in the province.
3. Confused, I check to see if he was expelled. I didn't get a pop up though and Sigurd did not have the negative modifier regarding attempted conversion (a -5)
4. Thinking maybe I misclicked, I go to place my chaplain down again and notice Uppsala is now unavailable. Like he was expelled, which carries with it a 5 year wait before another attempt.
5. Was going to repeat the process but Sigurd died and then I got distracted with both Cathar and Lollard heresies rising up in different quarters of my Kingdom.
tl;dr - So, has anyone experienced this before? Is being friends with a Pagan as a Christian block the court chaplain mission for conversion? Or is this a bug?
*Really wish I had the conversion to Norse event. Catholic authority is at a new low of 10.5, after losing all holy sites but Canterbury to Norse/Muslim kingdoms on top of several rotations of antipopes.
