I was playing Japan and it has me thinking about the Pacific War and how it's portrayed in the game. There's always room for improvement and I think there are some things that need to be added.
The Japanese player needs to be able to activate Last Stand on individual units. Fighting to the last man is pretty much how the Japanese acted the entire Pacific War on all those islands. I mean when did they ever actually retreat?
Land based aircraft need to be able to interact with Carrier aircraft. Because apparently they currently can't which is very unrealistic. However, if this is done then Carrier aircraft are going to get totally overwhelmed in the Pacific I think.
Right now you can put potentially thousands of aircraft on even the smallest of Pacific islands. Which to my knowledge is very historically incorrect. I think those small Pacific islands could only handle a small amount of aircraft. This is something that needs to be research by the Devs. Ask their historians if they have them. Which I hope they do considering all their games are about history.
Another big thing missing from Japan specifically is their night combat focus and abilities. The Japanese were experts at night fighting. On land and sea they attacked at night. On land it allowed them overcome enemies with more troops (like Chinese) and better weapons (like Soviets). At sea their ships had maybe the best optics in the world. There are at least a couple famous Pacific naval battles at night.
However, once the Allies had radar on their ships and learned to use it well, this night advantage was gone I think. So on land and sea I think the Japanese should have a buff to attacking at night. As a National Spirit I think. But if the enemy has radar on their ships then that advantage should not exist. Maybe this night attack buff would be randomized so it doesn't always work. Simulating the chance that they got caught.
Actually, the way the game handles Nighttime is wrong I think in general. The game treats night just like day. Units move and fight at night like normal like it's daytime. There's no functional difference and there's also no way to control how your forces behave during day/night. Night fighting was rare I think not the norm. And for example, in 1944 and 1945 the Germans could basically only move at night because of the Allied air cover. Moving at night should also confer a stealth bonus. In fact, I think there should also be some kind of 'Radio Silence' option that makes your Divisions much harder to spot but makes them slower. This is basically what the Germans did to setup their forces for the Battle of the Bulge.
