Well you've done all of the right things so far (getting Revolutions, playing as Belgium to begin with). Have you installed the hotfixes for Revolutions, though?? That would come next...

Also, something that you will be referenced to again and again will be the VickyWiki. It's full of lots of useful information for all players.

I guess the first area to start getting your head around would be the economic model. The economy is essential to Victoria, and is part of what makes it so good! Basically, always set to buy and/or sell things yourself! Never let the game control trade for you will lose money big time!

The secret to trade is simple: the more you produce, the more you can sell, and so the more you can essentially do anything (buy things, wage wars effectively, etc...). The way to produce more is by maximizing the output of your POP's. To do this, you should aim to get as many in work as possible, split as regularly as possible (they can be split when they reach a size of at least 40,000) and research technologies which enable production to become more efficient.

Hope this helps in learning one part of this game!

While WC is possible, it is certainly not FUN (for most people). Try to take a sensible approach during peace deals and don't grab everything you can. Getting a nice little Belgian empire in Southeast Asia can be much more interesting and atmospheric than creating a grey blob that rules half of Europe.

It's easier than you'd think. Colonise Africa early and aggressively and you can grab pretty much all of it before the others have their socks off (though you'll have a couple of colonial wars to clean up in South Africa).
Though I'd only recommend really going for Africa if you just want to see a large amount of your colour. Purely on a profit basis I'd go elsewhere.

Ruling half of Europe is usually a fun goal to me. Conquering the whole world is another thing though, it must be very dreadful. I do enjoy combat in Vicky, it seems more satisfying than just spamming factories and railroads. Germany and the UK are always a nice challenge when playing warmonger.

What you say is true, but it can be useful for a newb like me. I found it much easier to learn about war by using the money cheat and not caring about finances.

Sound finances is the basis of a successful war. Learn finance first then war.

If you want to start off a game without having to worry about large finances and complications with pops just play as japan. it's state capitalism as well so you can create what you like when you get machine parts. once you civilize you can run roughsod over korea, china, even the flemish if you like.

since Vicky is all about pop's, WC is not the goal, and after conquering China couple of times, you'll learn meaning of word 'frustration' :) (partisants pop up like crazy everywhere when you conquer, only to be replaced with revolutionaries ASAP you annex Chi.) in return you get only china's manpower, as it has very little industrial power, and even worse- non national pop's work at low efficiency... sucky!

concentrate on having highest pop growth, avoid manpower-costly wars, try having high immigration and assimilation (american countries have highest assimilation/immigration) and you can have 200mln 1 prov 'minor' ranked #1 by the end of game without even going outside:).[hint-constitutional-monarchy ASAP, keep liberals in charge, invent ideological thought, raise plurality and con for ur pops, when socialist parties come to existence, set them as ruling to get plurality events to fire:)]

btw any1 seen ai conquer China yet? so far it happened once for me playing VIP,ai controlled british india did it, ending with ~2 bn population total(!).

Cheat once in a game, and you have to take a very long break from the game to stop cheating. Don't take eiderdown's advice here.

What?! You make it sound like a nicotone addiction :) Cheated games are boring as hell, but helpful to learn the mechanics without worrying about bankruptcy and endless revolts.... imo.

I have never actually gone bankrupt in this game.

As for endless revolts, sometimes its nice to get a communist party in power. A good learning experiment in itself, I'm still not quite sure how to keep a communist government without everyone turning socialist and revolting.
