I am having some trouble in the game with being attacked by huge armies that should be way over their command limit yet they suffer no penalties. I dont understand the new rules for DD and how the game determines how many troops can attack.

Currently I am being attacked in my game by 29 divisions. There is a 29/39 number by the attacking leader but there are no enemy HQ units around. There is also a number by my defending general, but as I understand it, you can defend a province with unlimited troops without suffering penalties.

Can someone please explain what these numbers by the leaders are and how they are determined. Thanks:)

the first number refers to how many divisions are under the command of the general leading the battle, the second refers to how many divisions that general can command without penalty. Although you might not see a HQ unit around, it certainly sounds like one is there. Keep in mind that you don't get a perfect picture of what the enemy has on the map. A HQ just has to be in a neighboring province to provide benefits, though the numbers you're showing, would indicate that you have a FM with an HQ in the province being backed by an HQ (doubling the numbers again).

The numbers by your general I "think" are simply artifacts of the system, as I certainly also believe that defense does not have a command limit.

AFAIK there is one, it's the sum of all the command capacities of the generals present in the province that is being defended, doubled if there is an HQ about. However, the only way you could go above the limit is if some of the units present are commanded by generals that are over their command capacity, eg. a corps of three divs being commanded by an MG, or if some units have no general at all.

I am used to having the total # of units that can be involved in an attack capped at 24 without a penalty. This is with 2 FMs with 12 divisions each and a nearby HQ. Have the rules changed for DD regarding the max # of units that can attack without penalty. Please share your experiences.

I should also note that I have modified the leaders command limit a little in misc.txt. This may have messed a few things up. IIRC, a 29/39 next to an attacking general indicates he is commanding 29 divisions and can command up to 39. In an unmodded DD game, is a 29/39 number next to an attacking general a normal thing to experience, or is the second number always supposed to be 24 ( ie. 12/24) at most?

No, the limit (with an HQ present) is 24 per attack direction, if there is a FM in charge in every province the attack is coming from. So 24/39 is certainly possible.

WOW!!! I did not no that. Thanks for sharing:)

In my case the enemy was attacking me from 3 differant provinces so that clears up a lot of the confussion. Without a HQ, is the limit 12 units, per attack direction? This could totally change the way I play the game.
