Playing as Muscovy I annexed 9 of 10 provinces of Novgorod and now I get an overextension message with a +3 revolt risk modifier and +50% stability cost. How do I get rid of this? What are the criteria? I don't want to decentralize or release vassals. Thanks!

IIRC it has to do with your core:not core ratio with a multiplier of your centralisation. So as you guessed the short term solutions are decentralising or releasing vassals. Long term, you'll need to wait for more cores.

I think you need to get cores on your new provinces.

IIRC it's your leaders Administration and your countries Centralization. One of them determines the number of provinces you can have without worrying about overextension. If you've hit that total, the other determines what percentage of non-cores you are allowed.

I forget which is which, but I think it's Centralization to give you the total you are allowed and Administration to increase the percent of non-core allowed once you hit that total.

I wouldn't swear to any of that though. You'll have to dig up the appropriate script if you want to be sure.

I don't really get what causes overextension myself.
In my Milan game in about 30 years i conquered most of Italy and a bunch of southern Germany including half of austria. When I stopped expanding to let my infamy cool down (it was well over the limit) I had the second highest amount of provinces in Europe yet only three of them were cored (Milan started with 5 provinces, but IIRC you have to wait 50 more years for 2 to core).
Despite this, I never got the overextension effect, which i was sure I was going to have to deal with.
Whats more, all of my first 3 or 4 slider moves were towards centralization, and it never popped up after any of them.

The number of provinces you have to hold for it to go off is pretty high, it might be 50 or more depending on your decentralization or administration (I can't remember which).

Take a look a the event - you almost definitely didn't go over this number of provinces threshold.

Overextension triggered when I had <25% cores after conquering much of Ukraine and the Golden Horde on Holy War CBs. Now however i have become Russia and have cores on ~65% of my holdings, and overextension still hasn't gone off, so I am puzzled. Where is the event and what are the deactivation criteria? Thanks!

You need to put it in code tags - the indentation is important.

There are two triggers. One is based on your core percentage, modified by your monarch's admin skill. The second is to do with the number of provinces you have, and your centralisation value.

I forget how the game treats 'cities'. Are they non-core provinces? If they're not, that's a very steep penalty.

I.e. anything not a colony as >1000 pop is when a colony becomes a regular province.

I seem to be stuck. I now have >60% cores but still no relief from overextension even with better administrative monarch

Scanning the save file I can't find "exten", "extension," "extended," etc. or anything similar there. Other modifiers are shown but not overextension. But everytime I load the game, I have an overextension penalty. I can't seem to remove this manually nor find any trigger to allow it to be removed with meeting certain criteria. Any help would be appreciated.

I increased my monarch's admin, reloaded, and it was gone...odd...problem solved for now.

The centralization penalty is quite steep. While I like centralization, this will lead individuals to consider carefully pushing the slider too far to the left in large empires...

No, you have to fulfill both conditions:
1. you have to have too many non core in relation to your core provinces
2. you have to have too many cities in relation to your decentraliciation.

I think the second thing is in there to prevent a one province minor which conquesr 2 provinces to get this effect.

Here are the overextension triggers.

I do not, however, see any way to remove overextension...is there such an event?

-For "Effects" / "Modifiers" at least, there's a check at regular intervals to see if the triggers still apply. If they don't, you'll get the generic "We have lost the effect of XXX"-event. XXX being "Overextension" in this case.

So these types of "Effect Events" don't seem to have sepparate Removal-events. They just go away when they no longer apply.

I increased my monarch's admin, reloaded, and it was gone...odd...problem solved for now.

The centralization penalty is quite steep. While I like centralization, this will lead individuals to consider carefully pushing the slider too far to the left in large empires...

Didn't have any issues getting rid of my overextension as Byzantium. I just went around poaching any province I could get a core on (conquest or border conflicts) and waited. Most of Syria turned core and it fixed my issue, but after that I decided to go a bit easy on just landgrabbing. That modifier hurts.

No, you have to fulfill both conditions:
1. you have to have too many non core in relation to your core provinces
2. you have to have too many cities in relation to your decentraliciation.

I think the second thing is in there to prevent a one province minor which conquesr 2 provinces to get this effect.

Gotcha. I forgot that OR = on the same line need to both be met.
