Hi.

In SotS1 I sometimes would overbudget my research, which I always thought meant that I didn't line my slider up well enough, which led to alot of times where I'd just sit there squinting, trying to make sure my slider -just barely- went far enough to bump my research up to the amount of turns I wanted it to take, and no further.

It seems that this happens in SotS2, which I'm a bit disappointed in. Can someone explain to me a bit about how overbudget research works? Right now I have something at 103% completion...what do I do? Should I just leave it alone, touch nothing, keep ending turn until it completes? Or is there a specific adjustment I need to make when I go overbudget?

Overbudget is not really related to the slider. It is a random event that is increased by using the raw credits boost (forgot the name).

Not sure what it is in SotS 2.

Its linked to feasibility though I'm not sure if its working correctly now. I had a siege driver study at 1%, and am at 203% research. I've heard of research going as high as 1000%.

So is it just a matter of letting it work itself out? Would reducing my research slider to zero while overbudgeted hurt the chances of my problem resolving myself, or is it better to do so in order to increase savings in the meantime?

And also, could someone please explain what this 'Feasibility Study' is? It wasn't in SotS1, so I'm curious as to what this is for. Also, it gives me a percentage after each feasibility study which I guess determines how likely I am to 'succeed' in that tech. Does this mean that, the lower the percentage, the higher the number of turns it will take to research that tech?

Thanks for the fast reply, James and Nihilist.

It's a ridiculously unrealistic concept of science for someone who thinks that the inverse law of cube is the reason you can't make a shield for a larger ship than a cruiser (and thus Mecron won't).

He obviously has NO IDEA how science works.

---

Overbudget means you NEED MORE RESEARCH not LESS.

Low-feasibility means it probably won't happen and sometimes you'll get a message on event log that says its impossible.

Research is roughly the same as SotS Prime.

When you reach 50% researched, there's an increasing chance every turn that you will discover the tech.
If you hit 100% and still haven't discovered the tech, it goes overbudget - once you hit 150% you will discover it.

The only addition is feasibility, which is the chance you actually have access to the tech in the first place. If feasibility is less than 100% it's possible you will never discover the tech no matter how long you research it. The lower the feasibility, the higher the chance this will happen.

As a general rule, if research goes over 150% scrap it - odds are you won't be able to discover the tech. Although as in Prime, you can still salvage it from an opponent.

You got it wrong. The "turns to completion" and "budget" are estimates (Your scientists guessing). It might be done in advance (Not using your whole budget and taking 9 turns instead of 11), it may be delayed (Going 150% over budget and taking 20 turns), there might be a accident (AI wars ftw). Its a randomized feature that (Just like the randomized tech tree) exists in the game.

The accidents were ridiculous, while feasible, the entirety of my far away planet wasn't researching shields so even if someone got shot by an accidental shield failure or it overloaded it wouldn't take out 50 million people... <.<

It does when the shield generated overloaded and opened a brief portal to the Old One's dimension outside the planet's atmosphere. Gazing upon the horrific visage through this hole in existence drove an entire continent crazy and they spread across the planet eating everyone... else.
