Do not call me a strange man, but I think that I saw that the Duchy of Athens is Orthodox. It was a Crusader state, with Orthodox population and Catholic official religion. Please check that.

The Time of Troubles

After the desastrous war against turkey our empire was in ruins: the emperor has fled and could nowhere be found, a famine raged the countryside (-2500 pop to all provninces), the treasury was empty and the aristocracy debated, whether a bankruptcy of the state should be delcared. They didn´t come to a conclusion and instead demanded to restore their old rights of managing their holdings themselves (-2 stability). This state of chaos continued until june, 4th 1424, when Giacomo Lombardi, a Genoese officer, applied as drill instructor (+1 to quality ,+1 to offensive) in our realm. We gladly accepted, but the costs for Giacomo forced us to take our last available loan. The bankruptcy followed on december, 1st 1424. The regency immeditately started to restore order to our empire (maxed out the stability slider) and was quite succeslful (2 stabpoints ´til August, 1425 -thanks to our "serfdom" policy), when in August 1425 a political crisis (-3 stab) shocked our realm. The regency dissolved and a new emperor, Ioannes III. (iirc) was elected.
The first years of his reign were signed by his commitment to reestablish law and order to the empire. Perhaps his most important decision was to appoint the princeps iuvis, Konstantinos XII as new magister militum (3/4/3/0).
On Januar y, 1.,1429, still inspired by Giacomo, another reformation of the army towards quality (for a total of +3 quality and +1 offensive since 1419). The byzantine army was finally able to stand against the turks!

Out of the ashes

1429
On August, 28 Turkey declared war upon Quara Konylu and called the help of its allies Ak Konlyu and Teke. Soon huge armies moved through Trace and the people of Konstantinopel thanked God, that they only passed through this time.

Now the small Kingdoms of the Balkans saw their chance to hit Turkey hard. On September, 21. Wallachia, Moldova, Serbia and Bosnia delcared war upon the unaware enemy. The combined armies of this kingdom moved to bulgaria - a wise decision, as the heavy terrain there would make it hard for the turks to dislodge their siege.

The turks immediately turned one of their eastbound armies around to counter this new thread. On Oktober, 27. A battle was fought in Bulgaria - the turks got nearly anhiliated and of their 18000 men only 2000 could retreat.

Turkey faced a two front war now and at least on one front they fought a loosing war. Ioannes III considered to open up a third front - On November, 1. he ordered his army to prepare for war.

1430
January, 1.: The Byzantine Empire and Cyprus declare war on Turkey and their allies. Immediately small detachments of 6000 men each move from Morea and Dobrudja into Hellas respectively Rumelia. The main army under the command of Konstantin XI. is ordered to take Macedonia, but soon has to turn around as the battered turkish main army under the command of Murad II, the Sultan himself, is sighted heading westward.

February, 15.: The second battle of the Dardanelles: This time the turks are not attacked during the crossing of the straits. Konstantin XI. decides to have the whole turkish army on this peninsula, where their chances for reatreat are nearly nil. 5000 turkish inf. and 5000 cav. face the onslaught of the army of Byzanz. The 6000 men of the Byzantine heavy cavalry is led by Konstanin XI himself and wreak havoc among the turkish lines. On the left wing the reestablished Isaurian Guard cuts through the turkish line and destroys any hope of retreat. The turks are completely anhiliated.

sorry, but there have been at least 8 patches since the start of the gc and it didn´t make sense to continue ...
a short summary of the rest:
the war against turkey ended 1434 with full annexation of turkey after my ally cyprus has given me all turkish provinces in a seperate peace (the peace reslution has already been tweaked!). the turks have somehow managed to get the portugese maps and so my knowledge of the world extended to Bali! by 1440. in 1441 a first colony was founded in Bali and, with that, the Byzantine East Indian Trade Company. (in between there will be no longer random explorers before ~1480). Between 1435-1440 Konstatinos XI cleared the east of the rest of the minor turkish states and expaned it realm into mamelukian teritiory. The byzantine flag flies over Jerusalem since 1442.

there I finally stopped. the improvements since then were simply to great to continue.
