The Time of Troubles
After the desastrous war against turkey our empire was in ruins: the emperor has fled and could nowhere be found, a famine raged the countryside (-2500 pop to all provninces), the treasury was empty and the aristocracy debated, whether a bankruptcy of the state should be delcared. They didn´t come to a conclusion and instead demanded to restore their old rights of managing their holdings themselves (-2 stability). This state of chaos continued until june, 4th 1424, when Giacomo Lombardi, a Genoese officer, applied as drill instructor (+1 to quality ,+1 to offensive) in our realm. We gladly accepted, but the costs for Giacomo forced us to take our last available loan. The bankruptcy followed on december, 1st 1424. The regency immeditately started to restore order to our empire (maxed out the stability slider) and was quite succeslful (2 stabpoints ´til August, 1425 -thanks to our "serfdom" policy), when in August 1425 a political crisis (-3 stab) shocked our realm. The regency dissolved and a new emperor, Ioannes III. (iirc) was elected.
The first years of his reign were signed by his commitment to reestablish law and order to the empire. Perhaps his most important decision was to appoint the princeps iuvis, Konstantinos XII as new magister militum (3/4/3/0).
On Januar y, 1.,1429, still inspired by Giacomo, another reformation of the army towards quality (for a total of +3 quality and +1 offensive since 1419). The byzantine army was finally able to stand against the turks!
