Germany was on its own now and preparations for operation Uberlord could get underway in earnest. The Royal Fleet and various inf corpses return to England and await new assignments. In Europe nothing much had changed. Monty was still holding the boot of Italy and all but Germany had built an impressive set of fortifications on the French coast. They don’t fancy getting hit there again. The parts under the Alps and Pyrenées are not very interesting to them.
By September Montgomery arrives in London to take control of the Invasion force. Tedder is ready to assist him with new jet fighters whereas Cunningham will soon be after his battleships are refitted. It’s buildup time in full force now. There will be a panzer army of Cromwells, supported by loads of infantry, sporting the latest in artillery and antitank technology, covered by the world’s first jet fighters and the world’s largest fleet. The date was set for 5th of february 1945.
Ally wise, despite taking many losses in the last invasion, France was there to assist us. The Commonwealth nations of Canada and expedionary forces from Italy were also put under control of De Gaulle while Montgomery, apart from being the Supreme Commander, would also lead the British part of the Army.
The big question mark though was the involvement level of the Americans. FDR had died unexpectedly and Americans, after taking heavy losses in Japan, were not too eager to do another invasion against a nation that never hit the US itself. Xure, suplying strategical bombers, supplies and whatever more was easy to do. Storming the Atlantic Wall was another. Churchil flew to Washington to meet new President Truman and hammered out a deal, giving and taking a bit.
The Germans had taken Bologna by now and put Hungary and Slovakia back in their camp. They also had developed new planes and subs. Luckily our fleet exceeded them far in number and jets are hard to beat. They attacked in Iberia and broke thru the defences there and moved south.
