Pretty funny to see that Ottomans (double-checked, still Sunni) are a member of the Catholic League. Known bug or by design?

Also, why can England, non-member of HRE, lead Protestant League?

Well The Ottomans were historically in the league wars (They were on the protestant side), and so was France and GB. Anyone with their capital in Europe can join the league wars.

To join a league you need to have your capital in Europe.

People join a league according to their relations with eachother. For example if Austria is the Emperor when the league are opened and join the catholic side, nations that like Austria are likely to join the catholic league and nations that dislike Austria are likely to join the protestant one (same apply for each new member that joins so if Austria is liked by both France and Bohemia but France and Bohemia utterly hates eachother one may join Austria but the other will not)

And finally the Ottoman and France where together in the protestant league historically as they both hated Austria.

So yeah, anyone with it's capital in Europe can join a league and they usually join against their rivals.

Edit: also let me show a real weird Religious league setup. Take a look:

Austria, France, Commonwealth, Russia and Netherlands are all best buddies together in the Catholic League while the Ottomans, England and Spain (no Spanish Inquisition I guess) love each other and fight for the protestant cause.

The joining of sides is programmed to act like it did in real life where religion was just an excuse to destroy the nations according to rivalries and objectives. Most coalitions and group wars based on loose allaances throughout history are set up like this.

BTW I just realized that I got myself a nice excuse to keep annexing and ramping up AE. I'm the leader of Catholic League and Ottomans are on my side - nobody (at least not France) will dare attack me!

If you showed us a rough map shot it would probably be fairly explainable, they are most likely on that side because they hate Austria more than you.

It's pretty clear why they are on Protestant side (they hate me), but why they are leader, and not an elector (Ansbach, also on Protestant side)?

I'm not sure but I get the feeling theres some kind of order to it through religion and European lands rather than total lands, would be silly if a sunni nation could be leader of a christian religious league

I've actually thought more than a few times that the AI is way too eager to join religious leagues.

Half of the European Powers actually stayed out of the 30 years war completely or at least had very minor participation (Ottomans and PLC did little outside the 1 year Polish-Ottoman war, Muscovy stayed out completely IIRC, Portugal was busy as Spain's lapdog in the 80 years war). And then again half of the nations which did get involved directly never committed nearly as much resources as every league war in game represents (France joined the war rather late, England gave mainly economic support).

But in every single game ALL of the European powers join one of the sides, then beat eachother silly during an all out war that rarely lasts more than 10 years...

Wouldn't it be nice to have a lower intensity war going on for longer, with nations joining in and dropping out, and even switching sides?

It's not very obvious, but you get quite a substantial military boost for having participated in the League War (something like +0.5 AT, +5% Discipline, until 1821). So assuming you are confident you won't get steamrollered, it's quite worthwhile even if you end up in a bloody stalemate after 10 years.

Oh I agree totally, I never skip the league wars. But that's not quite how it went down back then... every single European nation joining one of two camps and smashing eachother senseless.

It was more like a mix of dirty proxy wars, underhanded diplomacy, and plenty of torture and rape, mixed with a few ballooning egos and a whole bunch of religious fanatics.

This is very debatable. First of all, Sweden was definititely not the leader when the war started in '18. Sweden's involvement started much later. And even then Gustav Adolph was so very dependent on French financial backing that there is a strong argument to be made for France being the leader of the Protestant league. Especially after Gustav's death.
