I play as Hungary and I'm the Emperor of the HRE.
To my big surprise is the Ottomans a member of the Protestant League, but the religion is Sunni. Is this working as designed (WAD)?

Yes if you are the emperor you automatically lead the catholic league -> Depending on that, all countries which really hate you will usually join the Protestant league and all of your allies will usually join the catholic league, no mather which religion they follow. (I think the pope is allways catholic league too + countries which can become the Protestant league leader often join the Protestant league, even if you were allied to them)

The leagues are just as much about geopolitics as they are about religion. For example, it is logical for a catholic France to side with the protestant league only to beat down Austria, same with The Ottomans.

Frightening......but thanks to all for the fast help. In the meantime also France joined against me in the Protestant League...I knew it...it was a mistake becoming the emperor as Hungary....:(

It should be stickied, absolutely!

I literally see them pick a side almost every game along with England, France, and Spain. Occasionally Russia gets involved. It's actually a pretty relevant fight for them in game play terms. They are nipping right at the heels of the empire.

I do wonder if it's the best way for the league to work. From what I've seen it means that the balance of power ends up being either so strongly for the Catholics that the war never gets declared, or so strongly for the Protestants that they steam role the Catholics.

One idea I had is that the league's could be broken down into two categories, "members" and "supporters". So only HRE members could be members of the leagues, but anyone can be a supporter of a league. Once the war starts it's only between the actual members of each league, however the supporters of each side provide some manpower and money, to the leader of the league they are supporting, each month. A supporter can cancel their support via the HRE screen at any point, so if it becomes to much of a drain they may well drop their support.

That way the war becomes much more about the actual HRE members themselves, instead of simply being decided by which way the likes of Russia, France and the Ottomans swing.

Maybe it might work out better that way but France for example did actively fight in the war on the Protestant side as a catholic nation. I aggree that non-HRE nations should be more reluctant to join the league war but some outsiders should still do it. Otherwise Austria with his allies would win the league war in 9 out of 10 games I guess. (if the player is not involved)

I always assumed it had to do with how the external nations feel about the current emperor. For example, if I piss off OE, then they'd join the opposite side. If you cozy up to them they sometimes stay out, but often would join your side.
