Playing the Ottomans and get this event flavor_mam.22.d about the Ottoman-Mamluk War of 1517. Basically adds a claim on every MAM province and a message about being able to annex the Mamluks by taking their capital. I remember you could do this in EU2 and an event would fire once you captured Cairo. I did this but no event fired and no option to annex in the diplo screen either. I found an event file (OttomanMamlukWar.txt) that lists the war_goal as

war_goal = {
type = take_claim
casus_belli = cb_conquest
province = 378 # Tarabulus
}

This is not Cairo and nothing happens after taking Tarabulus either.

Is it possible to annex all of the Mamluks just by capturing their capital or is this CB just a license to take provinces? What does it mean that I have a war_goal of taking their capital? Many of these historical war event files have this as a goal.

Those aren't event files, they're records of historical wars, and what the conditions are when you start a game during said ongoing wars.

So for that war, if your start date is in between 1485 and 1491, there'd be a war between Ottoman/Wallachia/Crimea vs Mamluks, with conquest CB targeting Tarabulus.

The wargoal will always be there if you start with a CB (except some, like holy war show superiority) and will give a ticking warscore to the side owning said province.

As for the flavor event you received, I believe the CB you've received is CB_Annex, and SHOULD give you a chance to annex the whole nation once you've occupied everything, though I've never tested it.

The claims are probably given just so you can core them faster and easier.

And then if I am in control of every 1 of their provinces, I will be able to annex even though they control all of the Fertile Crescent, Egpyt, Arabian Peninsula except Oman & pretty much all of Ethiopia in the game? After I conquered Tarabulus, my warscore was not high enough even to take this 1 province. The message said something about being able to annex even if not all the rules were met. What's that about? I've fished through several of the localization files, but can't find that exact message again.

Yes, it's the same rule as all other wars targeting a province.
The controller of the target province will get a ticking WS, and when the attacker controls it, they also receive a hefty amount WS.

And then if I am in control of every 1 of their provinces, I will be able to annex even though they control all of the Fertile Crescent, Egpyt, Arabian Peninsula except Oman & pretty much all of Ethiopia in the game? I've just tested this in a cheat run.

Yes, you can annex the entire Mamluks in one fell swoop.

Once you've controlled everything, bringing the WS to 100%, you'd be able to annex their entire nation under Annex CB even if the WS cost is over 100%.

HOWEVER! Your OE will go through the roof, so might have to release/sell provinces for a diplo-annex later.

Annex the whole thing, then release the whole thing as a vassal. Although... the AE may be excessive. Incredibly excessive.

Well, wouldn't it be much more coherent to give a subjugation CB instead of prompting the player to annex and then flood him with overextension ?

True, but the Conquer Egypt mission, which seems about the same, gives a very nice claim to everything. I'm not sure they'd want to put "take a bunch of Mamluk provinces" on repeat, and yet they can't really change the whole system to make swallowing such a huge target practical. So we're left to muddle through in any way we pick.

The AI actually seems to do this reasonably well. Often the map of the Mediterranean just has a huge "O" on the right.

I realize this is a old thread, but I thought I'd add to it because I came to it trying to get info and there wasn't a conclusive answer in here.

Now that I've completed this war, here's the deal:

1. You need to get the score to 100% to claim all of the Mamluk nation, but to get to 100% you need to control 100% of his lands.
2. This can by tricky, because if others are at war with him, they can have pieces you have no way of getting unless you wait it out or declare war to the other invader
3. Once you do get to 100% you can take ALL his territories as your own. This will incur a HUGE overextension % (was 420% in my game).
4. To solve this simply vassalize them as soon as you get his lands.
5. Wait for the dust to settle, suck up a bit with a diplomat and annex him.
6. Steamroll the rest of the map.
