Seriously...that strait can be defended with less ships you know...In this pic fleets are rated by "Total" tab.

He may have just got done with a war, Spain, Portugal, and Venice seem to have lost large portions of their navies, particularly galleys.

There were mention in the patch notes (or like?) that AI will try to defend important straits with more ships. And I suspect this is a result. Still 118 galleys bit much?

They're extremely cheap, they probably have a ton of cash, and losing control of those straits is incredibly bad for them. Makes sense.

Pretty hardcore over the force limit, 70 ships over is not that cheap. Sure building them is cheap but eh... If compare to their rivals less than third of those ships should do the trick.

You are incorrect. Galley maintenance is stupid cheap. Going double or even triple your force limit isn't all that terrible if your economy is good. It's when you mix in other ships that *do* cost money and receive the penalty that you get in trouble (which the AI Ottos tend to do, but still, galleys *are* cheap).

I learned this the hard way against Denmark in a Hansa game! 160+ galleys destroyed my whole fleet, big ships, light ships, and all!

I built loads of galleys in my last OE game too. It's an effective tactic. Galleys are cheap, your force limit is high, and as long as you're in the Mediterranean, you will dominate. I don't see why the AI shouldn't do the same.

Oh they should. And so should other meditarrean powers too. Nobody can rival them in that area because of that code. Which means they are invulnerable. And no counterbalance is here whatsoever.

A little like France on land, which no one seems to be bothered by. I take your point, though, there's been a change. Byzantium pre-1.8 were doomed. Byzantium in 1.8 are DOOMED. That's the difference, and I see why people are upset.

This is a very good point, though I think that in most games there just isn't anyone with enough cash or force limits to be able to compare to the OE once it's got going a bit. Maybe Spain, but they're going to want to focus on the colonies. They also should probably make fewer heavy ships, that seems like a big waste of resources they could be making more galleys or light ships with.

Byzantium is not that hard right now, you have a lot more money to build galleys now and the new lithanian province means crimea can't get to you on land

The player has been doing this trick all the time with Byzantine, so I am glad to see the OE is also spawning massive fleets, as it should due to its size. Naval maintenance has always been ridiculously cheap compared to army, and have always managed to control the seas as a naval power, making it too easy.

Invulnerable is a strong word.
