Odd thought...

Several transformations give your people wings. It seems that several culture units have the option to make some units mounted. If you take a wing transformation, do mounted units like knights still ride their mounts, or do they take flight?

If there are non-mounted versions of every mounted unit, that may expand the potential range of baseline forms.

maybe they could make lizard/insect forms but in customization add things like wings or multi-legs to cover a larger variety?
The DLC mentioned in the preorder implies that Reptile is the form, and new tomes will have dragon magic that makes draconians the transformation. Old Draconians would be rebuild using a reptile base and dragon transformation, but you could also make draconian with human, elf, or toad bases.

They could do something similar for insects: a humanoid insect form, plus transformations for instectoid wings. on a human like form, the wings would make them more like fairies

More similar than humans/halflings/elves/dwarves?
Humans/halfling/elves/dwarves have massive history in the realm of fantasy and thus are more divided in the minds of most players. As a general rule, the more familiar a race is to the more players the easier they are to tell apart independent of appearance. The only franchise I know of with major lizard people are Warhammer. And the only places I know of dragonborn from are D&D and AOW.

They aren't that well distinguished in my mind. Of course, in the AOW4 set up the only real difference would be the ability to breath fire, which is more of a transformation. So, if they were both forms then we'd end up with 'lizard people' and 'slightly different lizard people.'

I mean I'm all for multiple reptilians. But it would have to be reptilians that ware really markedly different, like that Naga/Snake People idea.
Or maybe cute little gecko men to contrast with the (probably taller, more intimidating) Lizards we're already getting (tiny lizards would also be good for creating Kobold factions)

Edit: To explain this better. I posted this image earlier in, I think, this thread. It's a Draconian from Age of Wonders 2 and a Lizard Man from Age of Wonders 1. The biggest difference between them is the colour. And if you take into account that we can chose the skin colour of our faction., I don't think those two would warrant two seperate forms.

I know the Draconians in Age of Wonders 3 looked more humanoid, but I think that is were the Draconian transformation will come in. So you can make both the AoW3 and AoW2 Draconians, depending on which form you start with.

If my memory is correct, In AOW2 Draconians were an "artificial species" created by the wizard king Tempest and they are not the original warter-themed lizard folks of AOW 1. Therefore, in the interest of lore consistency, I would vote for making Draconian a major transformation "template" instead of a starting racial "form"; though admittedly, gameplay wise it might be a little difficult differentiating the Draconian transformation from the Demon one, other than giving the former some fire breathing ability perhaps.

Draconian could also get tail and some scales.
