Ostereich uber Alles!
This is my first attempt to do a REAL AAR. That is, I'm going to take my time, play in 10 year blocks, and try to keep the notes detailed.
As far as info goes, when I record armies, I will only not changes in postition and size. So if an amry doesn't move, you won't hear about it next year. Furthermore, I won't bother mentioning anything trade wise except for monopolies. And diplomatically, I'll leave letters out, but all other maneuvres in.

1492, and a new era has dawned on our home of Austria. The Turks and their ilk have gone far enough onto European, ahem, Christian, soil. Let France and England have their petty squabbles. It is on our shoulders, and ours alone, that the future of Christiandom rests.
Before I lead you into the day-to-day details of our nation, let me first provide you with an overview of what Austria is today.
Armies- Mahler in French-Comte with 4,000/1,000
Maxner in Alsace with 4,000/1,000
Kapfenberg in Flandres with 9,000/1,000
Trautner in Austria with 25,000/15,000/20
Diplo- RM's with Hungary and Bohemia
Alliance with Bohemia
We control all of Austria, along with the Lowlands of northwestern Europe. This gives us the busling trade center in Flandres, which will be handy indeed to fund our endeavors. Now my lords and lieges, a summary of our activities for the last ten years:
To ring in the New Year, we approache Hungary with a treaty for alliance. Seeing the wisdom in this, they are quick to sign. The treaty is ratified on January 1st.
The Treaty of Tordesillas is delivered to us on April 1st. Thought we object in principle, the truth is that we have no great concern over matters so far from Vienna. This turned out to be a busy month indeed, as England approached us for a royal marriage, and we approached Bavaria with the same intent. On April 13, a grand ceremony was held, as two daughters of Austria were married off to great nobles of those lands.
Seeking to strengthen our postition in the region, I send an envoy to Wurtemberg in late June. On July 5th he returns, and reports that he successfully negotiated the entry of the Wurtembergers into the Great Balkan Aliance.
The last actions this year are to begin promotions of officials in the provinces of Austria, Styria, and Odenburg. This begins on October 8th.
1493
Armies- No Change
Diplo- RM's with Hungary, Bohemia, Bavaria, and England
Alliance with Bohemia, Hungary, and Wurtemberg
To continue the trend started last October, we begin promotions of Bailiffs in Carnolia and Salzburg on January the 8th.
On January 22nd, we sent a wagon full of fine Austrian ale to the Bavarian prince in a prelude to invitation of alliance. This improved our relationship with them dramatically. (rel to +64)
At the outset of February, I am very pleased to announce that we have mastered the technique of constructing siege guns for our armies.(Land Tech 3, Artillery)
It appears the ale worked its wonder on the prince of Bavaria, as we are able to bring them into the GBA on April 1st.
To solidify our bonds with our ally, we arrange a marriage of one of our lesser nobles to a bride from Wurtemberg. The ceremony is held on April 27.
The year ends with yet another marriage for Austria, as I include Baden in our royal family on December 3rd.
1494
Armies- No Change
Diplo- RM's with Hungary, Bohemia, Bavaria, England, Wurtemberg,
and Baden
Alliance with Hungary, Bohemia, Bavaria, and Wurtemberg
This is the year to finish improving our infrastructure, so on January 11th we begin promotions of Bailiffs in Tyrol, Ostmarch, and Presburg.
Half way through the year, we learn the art of building galleons to put out troops to sea. (Naval Tech 1, Transport Ships)
Austria now looks hungrily to expand our influence by the sword. We pain after Istria and other provinces now held by Venice. Those dogs! They will trade with anyone, even the heathen Turks! They shall be punished for their godlessness. But not yet, no, not quite yet. All we shall do for the moment is move Trautner to Styria. His recieves his orders to march on September 1st.
The yearly activity ends for us on October 1st, with an overhaul of our court and trade practices. (Trade and Infrastructure Techs to Level 2)
1495
Armies- Same, Trautner now in Styria with 24,650/14,930/20

We open the year with a rather unexpected turn of events. It seems Spain has seen our wisdom, and will support us diplomatically in our plans for the area. (RE: Diplmatic Move, rel +25 with Spain (now +165)) Also this month, we begin to recruit new men for our armies, in antcipation of our future campaign against Venice. Our new recruits number: 5,000 Inf in Tyrol and Carnolia, 1,000/30 in Styria
1496
Armies- Trautner in Styria with 24,650/14,930/20
Bogner in Carnolia with 5,000
Pfilster in Tyrol with 5,000
Diplo- RM's with Hungary, Bohemia, Bavaria, England, Wurtemberg,
and Baden
Alliance with Hungary, Bohemia, Bavaria, and Wurtemberg
After the calm of last year, we must now hasten preparations for war with Venice. It is decided to build up our fortress works in Styria and Tyrol beginning January 1st. The size of the new forts and terrain should stall any amry for quite some time.
God surely smiles on us this day, March 2nd, as Venice, along with the Teutons and Prussians (and what help can they bring?), declares war on Turkey and Georgia. Perhaps our time to pay the Venetians a lesson is closer than I thought.
The fools! Word reaches me on the 15ht of April that Hungary and the rest of the allince has declared war on the Turks and Georgians. Not wanting to lose face in front of our allies, we agree of course. Though to tell the truth, we have no plans to actually commit our own troops to this folly.
1497
Armies- Same
Diplo- RM's with Hungary, Bohemia, Bavaria, England, Wurtemberg,
and Baden
Alliance with Hungary, Bohemia, Bavaria, and Wurtemberg
The stupid Bavarians came marching through Styria last month. We already had barely enough food for our army, let alone theirs. This has caused some undue attrition, so I order 7,000 in Styria on January 1st.
With the recruits trained and incorporated into the Imperial Guard, the time now has come to take what is rightfully ours! On the Fools day of April, we inform the Venetians that the Turks are not the only threat they have! Of course, the rest of our allies join us, as does Venices'. We also draft 5,000 in Tyrol, Styria, and Carnolia to be used as replacements if the war drags on. Our first move of the confict is to send Trautner to Venice itself.
Trautner arrives on May 1st, and the siege of Venice begins. On June 8th Trautner defeats an army of recruits from Venice.
This will teach them! On November 10th, an army of 16,000 Venetians marches into Styria. What have we there but 5,000 second line troops. But lo and behold, we manage to send them scurrying back to Istria. Our own forces march to join Trautner.
1498
Armies- Trautner in Venice with 16,427/10,980/50
Diplo- RM's with Hungary, Bohemia, Bavaria, England, Wurtemberg,
and Baden
Alliance with Hungary, Bohemia, Bavaria, and Wurtemberg
The siege of Venice drags on into the new year. The walls seem impervious to our guns. Seeing that we need to organize another siege force to attack Mantua, we draft yet more troops. So, on January 6th we order 10,000 in Styria, 20 guns in Tyrol, 10 guns in Carnolia.
At the outset of May, I am informed that we can now mount smaller versions of our artillery on ships. (Naval Tech 2)
Our forces are ready, and we send Pfilster (10,000/20) and Bogner (10,000/10) move to Mantua on May 10th. Pfilster moves quickly, and arrives on May 28th. The siege of Mantua has begun.
On June 10th, the walls of Venice finally show signs of battle.
(5 to -3)
August 8th, Bogner reinforces Pfilster in Mantua.
The siege of Mantua proceeds at a steady pace, the walls weakining slightly each month until, on November 29th, we take the province.
That same day, Venice sues for peace, offering up Mantua, but we are only now realizing the full possibilities of this war, so we refuse.
Bogner wastes no time however, and takes both armies in Mantua to march throuh Tyrol and Styria to Istria.
1499
Armies- von Frundsberg in Venice with 13,661/10,971/50
Bogner in Mantua with 19,223/30
Mahler in Styria with 10,000
Diplos- RM's with Hungary, Bohemia, Bavaria, England, Wurtemberg,
and Baden
Alliance with Hungary, Bohemia, Bavaria, and Wurtemberg
Trautner has continually disappointed us with his lack of progress in the siege of Venice. However, an adjutant of his, von Frundsberg, show some signs of promise, and we assign him to take control of the attack. We continue to raise men and material for the siege, and begin recruitment of 2000/30 in Styria on January 1st.
March 25th, Bogner arrives in Istria and handily defeats an "army" of 5,500 Venetian foot.
Bogner continues to prove his worth by defeating a group Venetian recruits on August 8th.
In a twist of fate, Hungary cedes Croatia to Turkey. This strikes us as particularly odd, since the Hungarians had held Serbia for almost a year and half. This could have some long term benefits though, fuel for the peasants to hate the Turks.
Eager to bring the siege to an end, on November 1st von Frundsberg assaults Venice. Finally, 15 days later, we sack the capital, and Frundsberg immediately marches to Istria.
Learning from the lessons at Mantua and Venice, we have now developed tactics to better use our guns in support of our troops. (Dec 1- Land Tech 4)
As the year come to an end, von Frundsberg assaults Istria on the 22nd of December.
1500
Armies- Ferdinand in Styria with 12,000/30
Frundsberg in Istria with 10,944/9,261/80
Diplo- RM's with Hungary, Bohemia, Bavaria, England, Wurtemberg,
and Baden
Alliance with Hungary, Bohemia, Bavaria, and Wurtemberg
On New Year's Day, Istria falls, and von Frundsberg moves on Illyria. An intersting alliance has formed there, as both Turks and Wurtembergers now wait out the garrison of Venetians. God truely does work in mysterious ways.
February 5th, von Frundsberg arrives in Illyria.
On March 1st, von Frundsberg assaults Illyria, at the head of a combined Wurtemberge, Turkish, and Austrina force. What a strange sight those Venetians must have seen. But the did not last more then ten days. On March 11th von Frundsberg takes Illyria.
Two days later, a Venetian envoy arrives at our camp in Illyria. He offers on behalf the the Doge, Mantua, Istria, and Illyria to Austria. We accept the terms, and sent messengers to those provinces to inform them that they now pay homage to the Holy Roman Emperor. We move Ferdinand to Mantua, but von Frundsberg will stay in Illyria to garrison it.
On March 14th we send a cargo of fine Persian rugs, captured at Venice to the Bohemian Court. (Personal gift to Bohemia (rel to +193))
Bohemia declines to be our vassals on May 8th, but we will be back to claim those lands. Whether with kindness or with sword, only time will tell. For now, we will turn our eye on Bavaria, and present them with gold from Venices' coffers. (Personal gift to Bavaria (rel +170))
1501
Armies- Ferdinand in Mantua with 11,702/30
von Frundsberg in Illyria with 3,967/7867/50
Stuhlmann in Austria with 30 guns
Diplo- RM's with Hungary, Bohemia, Bavaria, England, Wurtemberg,
and Baden
Alliance with Hungary, Bohemia, Bavaria, and Wurtemberg
I open the year by ordering that 3,000/3,000/10 in Mantua, 5,000 in Istria and 2,000 in Illyria be raised to begin the recovery of our forces from the losses in the war.
On February 9th, Venice is further humbled, as they are forced to pay 232 gold to Turkey.
The rest of the year shall pass uneventfully, as we grow used to our new acquisitions in the Medditeranean.
1502
Armies- Ferdinand in Mantua with 14,702/3,000/40
von Frundsberg in Illyria with 10,967/7,867/50
Diplo- RM's with Hungary, Bohemia, Bavaria, England, Wurtemberg,
and Baden
Alliance with Hungary, Bohemia, Bavaria, and Wurtemberg
