For what it's worth shawng1, one of those votes was from me. This was a very tough pick, but I felt (having re-read all the nominees) that I had to vote for yours.
In my mind, 2nd place was about a dead heat between just about everyone else. I *think* my 2nd place would have been Nalivayko's Ottoman AAR, but I really enjoyed every single one of the nominations.
What we really had was 10 outstanding AARs who, in my mind, are equally desrving of praise as any other. Let me be verbose for a moment (what's new?) in order:
- Nalivayko's Turkey: outstanding writing presented on a reign by reign basis.
- Shawng1's Japan. My favourite due to characterization, narrative, intrigue, historical datum, etc...
- Heargarty's Two Tribes only suffered fractionally from being so far removed from the "action"...no small feat considering, and a delightful read.
- Vormaerin's Prestor John...a simply wonderful read, again, perhaps, suffering slightly from the country selection which doesn't lend itself to excitement. Nevertheless, a truely great presentation.
- Norgesvenn's debut AARabout fish and such. Don't be fooled. The wit is fierce and sharp and this was a wonderfully funny AAR to read.
- Mimior's "Pax Norvegicus" was also of outstanding quality and I followed it religiously.
- Faeelin did a masterful job intertwining RL and game play into an enthrallng story. A pleasure to read!
- Joe's unique "Gods" lark was high on my list, losing out to shawng1 merely through the reduced scope of the coverage. Nevertheless, I loved it while it lasted.
- Bismarck's Scotland was really great; but his best work is still out there for you to read...Cyprus is a better piece (IMO) and will get its due reward. One of my personal favourite authors for the care and intricacy of the stories he presents, this was only a shadow of what was yet to come.
- PE's romp through world conquest was entertaining, yet I felt that it lacked a certain "je ne sais quoi". I feel vindicated in my decicion when reading his excellent and moody presentation in the Denmark collaborative thread where I think he produced material that is (at least for me) the finest I've seen him pen (type).
At any rate, I really hope that each of you takes great pride in having been nominated. This is a very tough field and the choice was far from easy. I would really like to have been able to give ot 10 votes. They were all great!
