Im wondering if the new mechanics are working right in this matter.

Right now, post 1.07, you cant excommunicate or lift the excommunications of any other Orthodox character that doesnt have the same religious head as you. Im thinking this (hardcoded, I think) trigger needs some work...

Of course, the principle of the thing is that the Patriarch in Constantinople doesnt have dominion over everyone, and thats fine, he's not the Pope. Every religional Patriarch should be responsible for those characters living in his area of religious influence. BUT, everyone ought to be able to talk to the relevant Patriarch on matters of excommunications, not just "theirs".

In other words, I'm im the Emperor in Constantinople, and want to lift the Excommunication of some guy in Antioch, I should have to deal with the Patriarch of Antioch, but I should be able to do so. Right now, because the guy in Antioch doesnt have " the same religious head ", ie, he's not under the Ecumenical Patriarch, I can't ask anybody to excommunicate him. Surely that's not WAD?

I think it is WAD, but it's also annoying to have diplomatic options greyed out that seem like they should be doable. It'd actually make the game more interesting, if you had to juggle relationships with the various pentarchs.

Yeah, it should make sense that people in Antiocheia's sphere have to ask him -- but the Emperor ought to be able to use any vassal patriarch.

It's especially annoying if you use the reform empire decision and move your capital to Roma -- then all of a sudden all of your nearest vassals in western Europe are completely beyond your power. It's kind of absurd.

Consider this on my wishlist for 1.08 then; it should be a fairly minor alteration to make but sadly its hardcoded, from what I can see... the conditions for diplomatic options arent exported anywhere.

Btw, when I said hardcoded, I meant the diplomatic interaction part. The autocephaly itself isn't hardcoded, you can take it away in the common/religions file.

And doing so doesn't even prevent you from mending the schism either nor does it mess with any Byzantine/Roman events, but you lose the regional patriarchs, and their bonuses to religious authority...
