Origins of Europa Universalis?

Has anyone played the board game? I'd be tempted to track down a copy of it depending on how fun it is to play.

If you look at my post on top, there's a link to Boardgamegeek page for EU. You can find reviews, manuals, etc.

With my gaming group, we studied the rules, wrote down errata and a whole notebook of comments to simplify our gameplay. We tried, really. Hard. More than once. But never went past the first 2/3 turns. Just too many holes, two many rules.

Nonetheless, if you find it, buy it. The scenarios, the events and the historical info are really fun to read

Philippe Thibault is Europa Universalis, is AGEOD and is a genius at strategy game making.

He didnt do much with the computergame though..

Yes, I remember the days of Board Games and pen and paper. I still have a bunch of them: Gettysburg, Battle of the Bulge, D-Day all by Avalon Hill. I even have PTO by SPI.

Avalon Hill was good but I loved SPI. If you subscribed to their magazine (The General? Don't remember.) you got a game along with the magazine inside a plastic sleeve every single month! Sometimes about the most obscure battles. Punch out the counters, unfold the paper map and you were good to go.

I had War in Europe with I think thousands of counters and a huge map that occupied almost the whole floor of my then studio apartment. Lol what a geek...

I remember buying Europa Universalis at my local CD/DVD store in 2001. Looking at it. Looking at the box. Not knowing if I should take a chance or not. Coming home and installing it. Then being unable to unload / load armies unto boats in the irish tutorial and coming on the forum for help. I remember then Learning they were working on EU 2.

I also remember that Spain was pretty good at colonizing historically in EU1 unlike in EU 2.

I remember reading an article about EU1 in my local newspaper. Thank god I read that paper that day.

I love big board games with tons of cool plastic pieces. Trouble is, by the time I'm done setting up, the party has moved on and nobody is interested anymore, even me. Funny, because I have no trouble spending 40+ hours on a single Paradox game, or a single Dwarf Fortress.

The main thing I miss from the old old days is the fancy manuals. SSIs were shorter, but they'd have great historical stuff. On the other hand, there's so much available in tooltips now. I still want a .pdf for my phone though so I can read when I can't play. I'm looking forward to grabbing some AARs and converting to .pdf next week

My earliest memory of EU1 is playing as, I think Ireland, having a mission to discover the Mamlukes, and using a cheat to get some ungodly amount of gold (like D25,000?) using it all up, and wondering how I could ever play with an annual income of D50 or something.

I own a copy, that I bought after enjoying the first game, and I honestly wouldn't buy it as anything but a curiosity, or if you have a REALLY dedicated gaming group. I haven't dug it out of the basement in years, but I remember the manual being incredibly dense and with an iffy translation from French that didn't make it any easier to get through.

Kinda neat to look at though, and compare to the early games.
